Annegret Simon, a pensioner, is brought to the Abendstern senior citizens' residence by her son . She is unhappy in the new situation. Eckehardt Tiedgen is also dissatisfied with his life in the retirement home. One night he steals the gun from sister Amelie's friend, who is a policeman. When the seniors go on a sightseeing flight in a historic airplane the next day, Tiedgen hijacks the machine and demands - gun in hand - to fly to the Mediterranean . His children do not visit him and hate him because he is old and does not die. He hates his children because they are young. Tiedgen has nothing to lose.
Initially, some inmates are against the kidnapping, but Annegret Simon lets them vote and receives a majority for the Mediterranean flight. The reluctant sister is locked in the on- board toilet .
At Vienna Airport, the occupants demand fuel and food. The former actress Fanny Dè Artong is disguised as an Arab terrorist and is supposed to convey the demands. In Vienna, the authorities fear international entanglements, because the plane of Russian President Putin is expected shortly, and they let the machine start again. The young copilot Wednesday is allowed to steer the machine over the Alps. The seniors look in amazement at the magnificent mountains. As the pilots play music in the cabin, the passengers begin to dance. Sister Amelie is set free again.
However, they run out of fuel over the Adriatic; the experienced tug pilot can land the old machine gliding on a grass runway on an island. He leaves with a local police officer to get fuel. The passengers get off and after a few steps are at the sea. With that they have fulfilled a dream.

Filming locations in Germany were u. a. the manor house Blankensee , the technology museum Hugo Junkers and the adjacent airport of the same name in Dessau-Roßlau and - as Vienna Airport - the Leipzig-Halle Airport in Schkeuditz . The film was also shot on the Croatian island of Lošinj .
