Bitchcraft is the seventh studio album by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor . It was released on June 10, 2014.

backgrounds

From Jayy of Monroe's statement about his withdrawal from the music project shows that the band of the relocation of the music market of paid downloads to streaming was hit hard from about the year 2014, so that their revenues decreased noticeably. This prompted Dahvie Vanity , at whom this development caused panic , to revise the concept of the group. From the album All the Rage !! Blood on the Dance Floor began to deviate from their original focus on provocative , sexually explicit music and instead also convey values and discuss more serious topics. This culminated in the group's most commercially successful phase between 2012 and 2013. With Bitchcraft , Vanity wanted to return to the old premise of the band, which contrary to the concerns of Monroes, who felt increasingly uncomfortable to present offensive music to a predominantly young fan base , also happened.

The album was produced by Rusty Wilmot and Brandy Wynn ; Shawn Brandon , William Control , Kerry Louise and Jeffree Star appear as guest musicians . The latter's contribution is remarkable in that, after disputes with his label boss Akon, he withdrew from the music business in 2013 in order to (successfully) turn to the cosmetics industry . Star had previously collaborated with Blood on the Dance Floor, but distanced himself from the project from 2010 to 2013 after allegations of abuse against Dahvie Vanity. The two band members as well as any guest interpreters were always responsible for the songwriting .

Bitchcraft was released digitally and as a limited CD and vinyl edition . Three singles were released from the album: Poison Apple , Call Me Master and Freaks Do It Better! .

Music and lyrics

Like the previous album Bad Blood , Bitchcraft is clearly influenced by the dubstep or brostep genre, which is mainly caused by the increased use of wobble bass lines and synths that are typical for this style . However, with the work, the group moves a lot closer to pop music ; Little can be found of the aggressive mood and the previously large screamo elements (the latter element is only used on the 3 × 3 title ). Instead, the album focuses on catchy choruses and clearly sung passages. Occasionally there is also rapping . In the song Poison Apple , the piece In the Hall of the Mountain King is musically quoted. The first and last tracks are instrumental . An occult aesthetic runs through the entire album , which is also reflected in the lyrics. Often references are made to black magic , church burnings and obsession , although these are often to be understood as provocative sexual euphemisms . At several points the musicians state that they are only here to annoy the listener.

Cover design

The cover of Bitchcraft shows Dahvie Vanity and Jayy from Monroe standing in the middle of the motif, from stomach up. The background, which partially overlaps with the musicians, is dark blue-purple and depicts a forest with several leafless trees . The album title is written above the artist. It is visually designed to resemble letters cut out of newspaper , with each one of them being red . In the middle of the word, also cut out, a star can be seen. In the lower half of the picture there is a "B" drawn in red brushstrokes in a circle . The band name is written across it in lilac letters. The individual elements of the motif are arranged differently on the CD version. The "B", now much larger, represents the center of the picture; Vanity is to the left of it and Monroe to the right, both from the waist up and transparent in places . The band name is in the lower right corner. The album title stayed in the same place.
