Kawaii Monster is the ninth studio album by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor . It was released on October 31, 2017.

backgrounds

Kawaii Monster is Blood on the Dance Floor's first studio album, released since the band was re-founded in spring 2017. After Jayy von Monroes left in 2016, Dahvie Vanity decided to quit the music project and devote himself to his solo career. That plan changed, however, when he hired Fallon Vendetta as the new lead singer by his side. The musician previously collaborated with this on the second Sinners are Winners album The Invocation .

All the tracks on Kawaii Monster were written by the two band members themselves and produced by Noah Buchanan . As guest musicians are roasting rack and Jennifer Hill to hear. The vision of the performers was to create an album that would capture the atmosphere and feel of the older three Blood on the Dance Floor albums Epic , All the Rage !! and (r) evolution recaptures. Vanity spoke of not only adapting the already known songs for the new band member, but also creating a new, expanded version of them. Vendetta emphasized that the album is full of contrasts and would contain both a lot of darkness and a lot of light, so that the components ultimately balance each other out. This is also reflected in the album title.

Kawaii Monster was released in two versions. The regular, exclusively digitally available edition contains 14 tracks, while the limited CD edition of the work, which could only be ordered via the group's website, contains a new recording of the title Ringleader . This physical issue also contained a reissue of the Blood on the Dance Floor debut album Let's Start a Riot! at, which also appeared separately as a download .

Seven singles were released from the album: Resurrection Spell , Love Like Voodoo , Six Feet Under , Yo Ho 2: Pirate Life , Ghosting , Destroy and Kawaii Monster .

Music and lyrics

Kawaii Monster can largely be assigned to various sub-genres of electronic pop music. With fast, pounding kick drums , simple, memorable synthesizer melodies and a change between rapped stanzas and sung choruses, some songs correspond to Eurodance or Eurobeat . Still other tracks were composed and produced more melodic and softer, while the vocal track is provided with a lot of reverb , which creates a synth-pop sound. The song You are Enough represents a complete break in style , which is kept in the country style and mainly uses organic instruments.

In terms of content, the titles cover a wide range of motifs. There are sometimes thoughtful and reflexive texts that deal with toxic relationships, false friends or social media , among other things . However, there are also humorous songs that are similar to novelty songs and deal with topics such as pirates , coffee or ghosting . Through several tracks is also a certain pulling Horror - aesthetics .

Allusions to earlier Blood on the Dance Floor songs are scattered throughout the album. These range from the incorporation of quotations and song titles in the new texts through thematic overlaps and common stylistic features to the adoption of entire song structures. The title song of Kawaii Monster assumes example as Sample text excerpt "It's alive!" from the film Frankenstein , which was already used in the track Frankenstein + the Bride , and quotes the refrain of I'm a Monster in a line of the first verse . Love Like Voodoo , which mixes the motifs of witchcraft and love , is conceived as a continuation of content to Bewitched . Ghosting, on the other hand, is musically based on the song sexting , so that both songs have almost the same tempo, similar sounding synthesizers and an identical structure.

Cover design

The cover of Kawaii Monster shows Dahvie Vanity and Fallon Vendetta standing in front of a blue background, which has a pattern of images associated with occultism (including crystal balls , books with pentagrams or parts of an ouija board ). In the center of the upper area there are clearly two diagonal, parallel red lines painted on it. Vanity is left in the photo, wearing a black T-shirt , a riveting - collar and an antler . Vendetta can be seen on the right in the picture. She has a black blouse with white tips and a plain black collar. Her hair is adorned with a flower arrangement , while her fingernails are painted black and tapered to a point. In the lower half of the picture is the name of the band in large, magenta letters; underneath, the album title is much smaller in two different fonts, with the word "Kawaii" in pink and the word "Monster" in purple . The former is, as well as the band name, so stylized that it running color similar.

Dahvie Vanity is holding a yellow object in her hand on the motif , which is almost completely covered by the logos and the body of Fallon Vendetta. On a promo - photo album in a different pose, however, one can realize that there is this to be a chainsaw is.
