Scissors is the eighth studio album by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor . It was released on August 16, 2016.

backgrounds

Scissors is the last work by Blood on the Dance Floor, in which Jayy von Monroe participated as a singer and was initially announced as their final studio album before the final breakup. Originally only the farewell song Rest in Peace , the only single of the upcoming compilation RIP 2006-2016 , should follow him in terms of new music ; with Fallon Vendetta's entry as the band's lead singer, however, this plan was discarded and several other studio albums were also released.

The two band members have contradicting statements about the making of the album. Were Dahvie Vanity in a Q & A still on, the writing process was a particularly emotional experience for him and called him "blood, sweat and tears," said Jayy of Monroe in its opinion on exit from the music project, he would for the songwriting of single-handedly responsible for ten of the twelve songs in the Deluxe Edition. Furthermore, the working conditions at the plant were so bad for him that, among other situations, they contributed significantly to the decision to leave the band. Both singers are officially named as authors of all titles; all of them were produced by Noah Buchanan .

The album was originally released in a standard version with 9 tracks, and on October 30, 2016 in a deluxe edition with 3 bonus tracks. In addition to widely available download and streaming editions, there are also physical versions of the latter on CD and vinyl , which, however, were not released in large numbers worldwide, but were only available for sale in limited editions in the band's online shop .

The album was preceded by six singles: Safe Word , Ringleader , Bullseye (only on the Deluxe Edition), The Age of the Young and the Hopeless , Scissors and Sorry Not Sorry . Worldwide none of the songs could place in the charts.

Music and lyrics

Scissors deviates music and content both greatly from the preceding EP Cruel Pornography as well as from the previous album Bitchcraft from. While both works were dominated by sexually permissive texts, Scissors was the only album by the band to date that completely dispensed with explicitly explicit lyrics. This may be because Jayy von Monroe felt increasingly uncomfortable playing lewd music to a young fanbase. A large part of the themes of the songs are love relationships in which complicated conditions prevail or which have broken up. On Let Us All Unite is talk of the Jewish barber from the Charles Chaplin film The Great Dictator recited, in which the main character for humanity and cohesion stands for.

While the previously released EP mentioned above was still based on Industrial Metal sounds, Scissors is in comparison a melodic sounding pop album inspired by the 1980s with warm, spherical synths . The dubstep elements, which are still widely used on Bitchcraft , are almost entirely absent on Scissors ; the only exception is the single Bullseye contained in the Deluxe Edition , the chorus of which is a bass drop . Unlike before, the singing style of the two lead singers tends to be clearer. Both rap and screamo interludes , which could be found in abundance on earlier works by the band, are completely absent; also Autotune finds no large-scale use on the album, but the voices are almost continuous with Hall provided. The opening song of the album, Ringleader , stands out from the rest of the tracks with striking features of circus music and a fast 12/8 time signature; in the final of the Standard Edition, Let Us All Unite , is only spoken to the music.

Cover design

The cover is mainly in pink and turquoise pastel tones and shows Jayy from Monroe and Dahvie Vanity standing facing away from each other in front of a rock , the sea can be seen in the background . They wear black sweaters that read “Enjoy Death” and some Japanese letters. Dahvie Vanity's neck is adorned with a necklace with a pentagram , that of Jayy von Monroe is adorned with a key. In the upper third of the screen, the initials of the band, BOTDF, can be seen in white shaded letters , in the middle there are stylized bloody scissors , at the lower edge the album title in white (with the corresponding addition in the Deluxe Edition). A turquoise frame surrounds the picture.
