The Anthem of the Outcast is an EP by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor , which was also marketed as a studio album in Europe . It was released on October 30, 2012.

backgrounds

After (R) Evolution , The Anthem of the Outcast is the second work by Blood on the Dance Floor, which has had an unlimited, extensive CD release. In connection with the physical release, the EP was marketed on the European market as the first studio album available there. In order to achieve a longer running length, it was decided to add all three Clubbed to Death! -EP to add. In addition, the note "EP" was removed from the cover motif.

Of the 12 tracks in the longest version of the work, 11 were produced by Rusty Wilmot , Stevie Blacke and Brandy Wynn . Only the remix version of the song Unforgiven was produced by Matroda . Also appeared Ash Costello , the lead singer of the rock band New Years Day , on the song Hell on Heels (Givin 'in to Sin) on the production. The group appears on this track as a guest artist . Other featureings are Shawn Brandon and Haley Rose . Dahvie Vanity and Jayy from Monroe were always responsible for the songwriting and were supported by any guests.

Three singles were released from the EP. First a 7 " record was released, limited to 2000 pieces, with the double A-side The Comeback and Hell on Heels . Later Hell on Heels (Givin 'in to Sin) was also released as an individual unlimited single. Don't Want to Be Like You was released as the last song and music videos were made for The Comeback and Don't Want to Be Like You .

Music and lyrics

The original songs of The Anthem of the Outcast -EP represent a significant departure from previous music of the band is because they rely heavily on rock music , especially the subgenre Metalcore are embossed, while the previous pieces of the band purely of electronic pop music ascribe let. Electric guitars and drums are the main instruments of the work. Worlds Away and Don't Want to Be Like You represent ballads , the former being characterized by an opulent and the latter by a minimalist orchestration. The Comeback stands out for its extensive screamo interludes and tempo changes , which form a strong contrast between the hard verses and the clear and melodically sung chorus. Despite the EP's stylistic inconsistency with the group's previous discography, electronic elements are occasionally used. In particular, the intro The Calling and the Matroda remix of The Unforgiving open and close the work with excursions into electro music. In terms of content, most of the songs on the EP revolve around finding and maintaining one's own identity. Oppression by third parties is counteracted by striking back and leaving the situation as the stronger.

The additional titles that the Clubbed to Death! -EP, in terms of content and style, stand out clearly from the main work, as they have more explicit texts and the electronic elements predominate on them.

Cover design

The cover of The Anthem of the Outcast shows Dahvie Vanity and Jayy von Monroe standing in the desert . Both are mainly dressed in black , with Monroe wearing a leather jacket and Vanity wearing a full body suit in a skeleton look . The names of the two singers are in blue letters in the middle of the motif. criticism

The Anthem of the Outcast received negative reviews. Especially in magazines that specialize in rock music, the band's attempt to turn to harder sounds was viewed as a failure and the EP was felt to be a soulless mass product. Blood on the Dance Floor is still too close to electronic pop music; the structures of the songs would be too simple. One criticized in particular the frequent use of phonetic singing and the extravagant appearance of the band, which the average music could not hide. The songs would certainly appeal to a young target group, but beyond that they would have no musical added value.

success

The Anthem of the Outcast reached number 140 on the Billboard 200 charts in the USA , and was also able to occupy positions 21 and 43 in the alternative album charts there and in the Top Rock Albums charts.
