It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World is the second studio album by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor . It was released on September 12, 2008.
backgrounds
It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World was released five months after Let's Start a Riot! , Blood on the Dance Floor's debut album. After Rebecca Fugate's death, the line-up of the band initially consisted of Dahvie Vanity , who appeared as the lead singer, and Christopher Mongillo , who was the group's producer. The latter left the music project before the album was completed, whereupon Vanity became its only official member. However , this hired Garrett Ecstasy as an accompanist and screamer to support him with the recording of the work. It was only after the publication of the Standard Edition that it was discontinued as a full-fledged part of Blood on the Dance Floor; on the first Deluxe Edition, published in 2009, he graces the album cover in addition to Dahvie Vanity and is recognized as an equal member.
Christopher Mongillo and Rusty Wilmot produced all of the tracks on the standard edition of the album, which were single-handedly written by Dahvie Vanity. The only exception in both cases is the song Blood on the Dance Floor (DJ Pickee Remix) . In this song, Mongillo and Vanity acted together as songwriters , while DJ Pickee was the only producer . It is a remix version of the track of the same name from the previous album.
It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World was released in four different versions. The digitally published Standard Edition contains a total of eleven titles. There is also a CD edition, which was published a month and a half later, signed by Vanity and limited to 300 copies. The tracklist on the cover is identical to that of the digital edition, but it contains two unlisted additional songs as well as two instrumental interludes , each less than half a minute long . In 2009, on a tour of the band, another physical version was available, which was titled as a Deluxe Edition. In addition to the content of the Standard Edition, this contains four songs from the I Scream I Scream - EP , as well as the same two hidden tracks from the first CD version, but no interludes. The last edition of the album for the time being was released in 2013 and is called the Platinum Edition (although the album received neither a platinum nor a gold award worldwide). This contains the complete Standard Edition, two instrumental versions, as well as several titles that were to be found on various EPs and deluxe editions of other albums. This version was released in the form of a CD limited to 1000 copies.
Two singles were released from the standard version of the album: Save the Rave (which was still titled Superstar on the single ) and Blood on the Dance Floor (DJ Pickee Remix) . All singles for bonus tracks of the various limited editions of the album previously appeared on other works by the band and are attributable to their promo phases .
Music and lyrics
The music of It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World can generally be classified under the broader genre of electronic pop music . The first half of the work corresponds with its clear techno influences (especially the static, pounding kick drums ) the Eurodance style, which the group also used on the follow-up albums Epic and All the Rage !! largely retained. Towards the end of the Standard Edition, however, the direction of the music changes, and that already on Let's Start a Riot! Extensively used synth pop is used more and more on the last four songs. In these, the drums are no longer the main instrument , but a dominant synthesizer . On the album, Dahvie Vanity can mainly be heard rapping or speaking rhythmically. The proportion of Screamo is also greater than on the predecessor. The texts of the work are predominantly sexual in nature or deal with a boisterous party mood , often in connection with drug consumption , whereby there is also a self-portrayal borrowed from the hip-hop genre .
Cover design
The cover of It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World is minimalist - especially in comparison to all of the band's other albums, whose motifs mostly contain a multitude of details . Dahvie Vanity stands on it in front of a uniformly white background and wears clothes that correspond to the raver scene . To his right, in the upper half of the image are in rivet look the initials of the band and including in black cursive writing the album title. This motif was used for the digital Standard Edition and the first CD edition.
The cover has been modified for the Deluxe Edition. Garrett Ecstasy is now to the right of Vanity, wearing a blue-green T-shirt and jeans . The album title is now above the heads of the musicians, with the addition "Deluxe Edition". Under this lettering, three songs from the album are advertised in small, red letters, but the initials of the band are missing on this variant.
The Platinum Edition has a completely different motif. On this one can see Dahvie Vanity, whose hair , clothes and makeup are all in shades of purple . Only his contact lenses stand out bright red. He is enclosed in a blue diamond that begins to break where his hands are . The background also has a crystal structure and is kept bluish. At the top left of the cover is the band name in rivet optics, but unlike the Standard Edition, it is written out. In the lower center is the album title in white, blue-framed script.
