Let's start a riot! is the debut album by the US band Blood on the Dance Floor . It was released on April 16, 2008.

backgrounds

Even before the official formation of the band, Dahvie Vanity wrote a song called Let's Start a Riot on September 5, 2007 , which was later renamed Blood on the Dance Floor on the album (in return the original title was used there for the instrumental intro ). In doing so, he laid the foundation for his long-standing music project, which he started in the same year together with his friends Rebecca Fugate and Christopher Mongillo for the time being under the name “Love the Fashion” (from 2016, however, he would claim that it was already in 2006 to have created). The final title of the band goes back to a suggestion Mongillo made during the studio recording. Dahvie Vanity became the band's lead singer and Christopher Mongillo was responsible for producing all of the pieces the two wrote together, as well as taking on supporting vocals in several places. Rebecca Fugate's voice can also be heard on the album, but only in a few lines and not on all of the songs. Her role within the project was mainly as a manager . However, before the group's first album was released, she was killed in a car accident. The song Libertine , included as a bonus track on all versions of the same, is dedicated to her.

Let's start a riot! was only available in a single version for nine years, which comprised 13 titles. In 2017, however, a so-called Party Edition was released, which contains additional songs. The limited CD edition of this edition, which was available exclusively on the group's homepage , added new recordings of the tracks Fallen Star and Modern World Christ , on which the then singer of the band Fallon Vendetta can be heard. The cover of the sound carrier also lists a newly recorded version of the song Blood on the Dance Floor , which is not available on this one. The same two bonus tracks, though arranged and titled differently, are also included on the download version of the Party Edition, which also contains instrumental versions of the main tracks with the exception of I Hope You Choke , Till Death Do We Party and Libertine , which is already instrumental Intro Let's Start a Riot was added seamlessly to the song I Can't Get Enuff .

The only single from the album is Bitches Get Stitches , which was released six years after this. Although 2008 was DJ Pickee - remix of the album tracks Blood on the Dance Floor also released as a single but it can be used as decoupling of the successor work It's Hard to Be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World are considered on which it is included.

Music and lyrics

The music of Let's Start a Riot! can mostly be assigned to the synth pop genre. Synthesizer and keyboard sounds , mixed dominantly in the foreground, underline almost the entire album and take up a large part of the instrumentation. Both artificial drum computers and classic drumming are used for the rhythm . Another instrument that is used sporadically is the electric guitar , which is mostly only mixed into the background as a support, for example during the verses of I Can't Get Enuff or during the Bridge of Modern World Christ . Occasionally, however, it also takes a larger place in the music, so it is the lead instrument on I Hope You Choke and Libertine , and plays an extended solo on You're a Dancer, You're Not a Lover . The audio quality of some of the recordings is noticeably worse compared to the band's other albums, and Dahvie Vanity's vocal presentation is out of time and uncleanly sung in several places. This applies above all to those three songs whose instrumental versions cannot be found on the Party Edition. Some of the songs are raped or spoken rhythmically.

The lyrics of Let's Start a Riot! are mostly provocative and shocking. They are often strongly sexual, sometimes brutal, and show an exaggerated self-portrayal that is borrowed from the hip-hop genre. The song Fallen Star is an exception here, as it deals with the death of a loved one.

Cover design

The original cover of Let's Start a Riot! resembles a collage and shows Dahvie Vanity in front of a multitude of different colored comic-like images, including lightning bolts , lips , speech bubbles with the band's initials , music notes , stars , music tapes , dollar signs and arrows . The singer wears black wings , two silver necklaces , a gray T-shirt and red and blue strands . In the upper left corner are the band name and the album title in pink letters.

The cover of the Party Edition is based on that of the studio album Kawaii Monster , which was released at the same time . It uses a light blue background with occult motifs, which runs down into a purple shade . Dahvie Vanity is in the foreground from the upper body upwards and is brightly made up , has antlers on her head and is wearing a black and white T-shirt. The band's name is written in big red letter on his body , including significantly smaller in green the album title and the edition.
