history
Bornum was first mentioned in a document in 1132. It was the seat of the Lords of Bornem, the most important landowners were the Lamspringe Monastery , the Dukes of Braunschweig and the Counts of Wohldenberg . Bornum was an industrial village for a long time. The Wilhelmshütte had existed on the Nette since 1727 . Until it went bankrupt in 1966, it operated as a stove and oven factory with around 600 employees. This is where the BORNUM stove, which is known far beyond the region, was manufactured. With the construction of the Derneburg – Seesen railway , which was completed in 1887 to Bockenem and in 1889 to Seesen, Bornum received a railway connection through the establishment of a stop. However, the line was closed in 1990 for passenger and in 1995 also for goods traffic. It is still used occasionally by a museum railway and occasionally for the transport of goods.
