history

In the High Middle Ages, the area of today's village was a cleared area with individual farms and wastelands. The first documentary mention of the place took place in 1390 as in Praitnpach . Further mentions followed in 1426 as Praytenpach in the Gaistal , around 1470 in the Reiner Judenbuch as Praittenpach and finally in 1882 as Breitenbach .

In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Breitenbach belonged to the manor of Rein Abbey . The monastery was followed by the lords of Kleinkainach with the office in Oberdorf , Obervoitsberg with the office in Tregist and Großlobming with a bailiff's office as landlords. Breitenbach belonged to the advertising district of the Piber rule . In 1646 the Gasthaus Weber Hoffstat, so Taffernrecht, is mentioned at the confluence of the Breitenbach in the Oswaldgrabenbach. For the year 1822, a toll mill and a saw are documented for the place. In the period around 1840, Breitenbach delivered several thousand barrels of charcoal per year to the scythe factory in Kainach.

From 1929 there were plans to build a connecting road between Kainach near Voitsberg and Rachau and Knittelfeld , which would have been shorter than the route over the Gaberl and through Breitenbach. Construction of the road began in 1936 but was never completed. Breitenbach was electrified in 1952 after the necessary transformer stations had already been built the year before.

Economy and Infrastructure

Breitenbach is characterized by agriculture, with forestry playing a major role. Grassland farming and animal husbandry only play a subordinate role. In the 19th century, charcoal was produced in Breitenbach for the scythe factory in Kainach. At the same time there was a mill and a saw in the village.

The local children attend elementary school in Kainach near Voitsberg.

Buildings

There are some wayside shrines in the village. The Ullikreuz is a pillar shrine on the connecting road to the Kainach-Eckwirt and has a niche design created by Franz Weiss with depictions of the Holy Trinity , Donatus, Florian and Georg . Allegedly nine Jews are said to have been buried at the site of today's wayside shrine. The Grafenkreuz is a pillar north of the connecting road to the Kainach-Eckwirt from the beginning of the 18th century and is said to have been erected on the occasion of an earthquake in a place where the earth did not shake. It originally housed a carved figure of Christ, which was stolen. The Klementkreuz is a chapel shrine on the connecting path between Oswaldgraben and Breitenbach and probably dates from the 19th century. The White Cross, another pillar shrine, was built either in the 17th or 18th century and originally housed a wooden Pietà .
