Buick Y-Job (1938)
Buick Super Series 50 Model 56C Cabriolet (1950) that showed the styling of the Buick Y-Job in the series

The Buick Y-Job is the first concept vehicle in history.

It was designed by Harley Earl . The car had pneumatically operated pop-up headlamps , a radiator figure , reminiscent of iron sights of a gun, guided wraparound bumpers , special door handles and styling details that Buick used up until the 1950s. It was the first vehicle with electric windows.

There are various explanations for the designation "Y":

  • All of the test vehicles were named "X", so Earl just used the next letter in the alphabet.
  • Earl chose the designation "Y" because it was often used in the aircraft industry and there denoted the most advanced prototypes .
