The Federal Construction Ministry (unofficial name; BMBau for short ) was a supreme federal authority in the Federal Republic of Germany , which existed from 1949 to 1998.

The name has changed several times in the course of history, so it was initially called the Federal Ministry for Reconstruction , from 1950 to 1961 Federal Ministry for Housing , then until 1965 Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Regional Planning , then Federal Ministry for Housing and Urban Development (or 1969– 72 with reversed order of the two terms) until it was finally given the name Federal Ministry for Regional Planning, Building and Urban Development in 1972 , which it carried until its dissolution.

In 1998 the BMBau merged with the Federal Ministry of Transport to form the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing (BMVBW). From 2013 to 2018 the construction division was affiliated with the Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB), and since 2018 it has been part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs (BMI).

history

In 1949 the Federal Ministry for Housing was founded. Lauritz Lauritzen (SPD) was from July to December 1972 minister of construction, post and transport in personal union; however, the three ministries remained organizationally independent. In the Schröder I cabinet , the Federal Chancellor's organizational decree of October 27, 1998 merged the BMBau with the Federal Ministry of Transport to form the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing . Its first head was Franz Müntefering (SPD).
