history

In 1461, Duke Wilhelm of Saxony, as Landgrave of Thuringia , enfeoffed the Counts of Hohnstein , Schwarzburg and Stolberg with the cities and castles "Lare, Utterode, Elrich, Bodungen and Blicherode". A copy of the original certificate is in the Thuringian State Archives in Rudolstadt and was shown in the original for the first time in Großbodungen on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the certificate's issue . The document is the first written mention of the castle, although its history goes back further.

The former moated castle was built as a fortified castle in the 13th century by the local nobility, the Lords of Bodungen . In 1329 the family expanded the castle to include a stone house with a fireplace . In 1417 at the latest, the Lords of Bodungen, as ministerials to the Mainz bishops, gave up the castle and its fiefs . The castle came to the South Harz Counts of Hohnstein, who sold the castle and the associated chamber property in the 16th century to Hans von Berlepsch , a son of the Wartburg captain, who offered Martin Luther refuge in the Wartburg . The von Berlepsch family gave the castle complex its architectural form with a half-timbered inner courtyard, which has been preserved to this day , through extensive extensions . The entrance to the castle was moved from the west to the east; the cellar vault was also expanded and greatly expanded.

In 1593 the dynasty of the Counts of Hohnstein became extinct , and the castle became the property of the Counts and later princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who were related to the Hohnsteiners . It served as a warehouse and economic administration. After the abdication of the last ruling Prince Günther von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt-Sondershausen (1852-1925), the castle came into the ownership of the community of Großbodungen in 1920 during the Weimar Republic .

In 2012, Graf and Countess von Westphalen were awarded the foundation prize of the German Castle Association for their professional renovation .

Since 1998, art exhibitions, lecture and reading evenings on topics from art , culture , politics , economy and society have been held in the rooms of the castle ( gallery ) . A second exhibition was dedicated to “ Archaeological finds from the Hasenburg region .” It was on permanent loan to the Burgforum Association . A third permanent exhibition included a collection of “ Mayan clay sculptures from Central America .” All exhibitions could be viewed until November 3, 2019 by prior arrangement. Due to the great demand for events in the gallery in the castle , the gallery's premises were relocated in 2005 to the “ historic bower ”, 500 meters away, originally part of the castle , a half-timbered building built in 1663 . Exhibitions , readings , concerts , lectures and events such as Day of the Rose (last Sunday in June), Day of the Open Monument and the traditional Großbodunger Christmas market on the 1st Sunday of Advent took place there until the end of June 2018 .
