history
Preface
The Kemenate , popularly known as Kemnot , is an ensemble consisting of two half-timbered houses with an old arcade and, along with Großbodungen Castle, represents one of the most important architectural monuments in the historic center of Großbodungen .
The historic bower ensemble became known as the home of the writer Carl Duval (1807–1853) from Nordhausen . He gave in 1845 in Großbodungen the famous book " The Eichsfeld or historical-romantic description of all cities, castles, monasteries, villages and other notable points of the Eichsfeld " out which with skillful lithographs from the hand Duval illustrated and even today as a standard work on the Eichsfeld applies.
Name declaration
The name Kemnot is explained in different ways: “If there was an emergency”, the building would provide security - is an explanation. “Domus Caminata” - a house with a fireplace - is another derivation. Security and warmth complement each other. Located on a Franconian - Saxon trunk road in the middle between Nordhausen and Duderstadt , the Kemenate offered a heated rest area. For example, “cheminata” in Old High German means : 'stay' or 'hostel' with a warming fireplace. In the High Middle Ages , the Kemnot was a building corresponding to the Großbodungen castle owned by the von Bodungen lords , which was characterized by a fireplace and a heating fireplace, while the castle initially served as a refuge and fortified castle .
The fief
The local noble family of von Bodungen moved to the Eichsfeld in Martinfeld in the 14th century , gave up the village fief and castle in favor of the influential South Harz Counts of Hohnstein . After the Hohnsteiners died out in 1593 , the Bodung fief came to the Counts of Schwarzburg via a hereditary fraternization treaty . A brisk change of ownership began. After the Thirty Years' War , the bower went into the possession of the Bodunger Graeflich, later Prince of Schwarzburg officials .
The builder
In 1663, the Graflich Schwarzburg bailiff Thomas Billeb (approx. 1617–1687) replaced the existing, presumably dilapidated, old building with a stately home. On the two-wing half-timbered system, the outer facades are characterized by artistic oak framework . In the inscription above the entrance to the gate he declares himself to be the builder with the words:
“ To praise God, my gracious gentlemen, to honor the Counts of Schwarzburg and Stolbergk on both sides, Counts of Hohnstein, for the best of me and my heirs, I have won this hope from Thomas Billeb. Anno 1663. "
In addition to the generous room layout, a large “black kitchen” with an open hearth and a mighty chimney that extends into the roof distinguishes the north wing of the complex, the house on the water. The “black kitchen” - according to information from the State Monuments Office, one of the largest in Thuringia - was bricked up during the GDR era and is only partially visible today.
The builder Thomas Billeb - coming from a humble background - made a remarkable career in Großbodungen from farmer's son to counts bailiff. Billeb held this office for almost 34 years until his death in 1687. The associated with his office lease of about 360 acre large chamber property and Kemenatenlehen were obviously economically bearable for Thomas Billeb. The residents of the villages of Kraja , Wallrode and Bodungen, which belonged to the office , had to do labor in different ways . For the residents of Haurode, who also belonged to the office , there was a regulation that they had to work on the gardens behind the office building , which was housed in Großbodungen Castle, on certain days.
Income from office and successful agriculture put Thomas Billeb in a position in the seventh year of his office in 1659 to purchase the Kemnot fiefdom , which included a large estate. He will probably have started rebuilding the bower soon. Four years later, in 1663, the stately half-timbered houses was completed and Billeb was his from samples born derived Katharina Kauffmann and the 8 children move into their new home. Until his death in 1687 Thomas Billeb lived in the bower he had built.
Other owners
After Billebs death in 1687 his son Heinrich Christian inherits (1664-1724), the property, whose children it to the Bodunger 1729 bailiff and Councilor Johann Friedrich Wackerhagen sold (1681-1747). Until 1778 the houses remained in the possession of the Wackerhagen family, who undertook extensive redesigning of the interior. Baroque wall panels, doors and cross -frame windows as well as high-quality wooden floors, some with baroque, floral inlay work , still bear witness to these renovation measures .
Economic hardship of the Wackerhagen family led to the foreclosure auction of the bower in 1780 . The new owners were the bailiff Geußenhainer from Bodung and his brother-in-law, the businessman Johann Daniel Trautvetter from Bleicheröder . After Eichsfeld and thus Großbodungen became Prussian as a result of the Napoleonic Wars in 1816 , another change of ownership was due in 1818: the merchant Julius Weber took over the bower. Weber was caught while smuggling across the nearby Prussian- Hanoverian border near Sonnenstein , and the Kemenate was foreclosed by the government in Erfurt in 1840 .
For the next 8 years the property changed into the possession of the economist Johann Gottlieb Möller, who let the writer Carl Duval mentioned above live in the north wing of the property . In the revolutionary year of 1848 the houses went to the family of Kgl. Prussian Kommerzienrat Johann August Müller over. His daughters inherited the bower: Charlotte Müller (1853–1925) was married to the Bodung pastor and superintendent Gustav Blau (1842–1925); the place owes a careful and comprehensive chronicle to him . Her sister Alvine, wife of Freiherr von Uslar-Gleichen , lived in the Kemnot outbuilding after her estate went bankrupt .
The descendants of the two sisters received the bower back in the mid-1990s and sold it in 2005 to Raban Graf von Westphalen and his wife Gerlinde Countess von Westphalen , who had owned the castle since 1994. The half-timbered ensemble, which was threatened by decay due to vacancy for years , has since been extensively renovated. For the renovation , Count and Countess von Westphalen were awarded the foundation prize of the German Castle Association in 2012.
In November 2018, the Kemenate Großbodungen was sold to a couple from Saxony .
