The Schauenstein Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 460 m above sea level. A. near Pölla in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria .
history
In 1175 a Poppo von Schauenstein was first mentioned in a document. Later owners were among others the Kuenringer and Sonnberger . In 1467 the castle went to Ulrich von Grafenegg , who handed it over to Matthias Corvinus . Then it was by imperial troops under Emperor Friedrich III. conquered.
In the 16th century the castle was renewed again. In 1622 the Kuefstein acquired the castle and combined the rule of Schauenstein with the rule of Greillenstein . In 1645, Schauenstein was conquered by the Swedes during the Thirty Years War , destroyed and never rebuilt. It was only in the last decade that backup work was carried out.
The pentagonal, 30-meter-high, climbable donjon from the 13th century, from which one has a good view of the Kamptal, and the Palas have been preserved .
