Burgstall Großwendern

The Großwendern castle stable , also popularly known as Steinelburg , is an abandoned castle of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte) about 900 meters north-northeast of the center of Großwendern , a district of Marktleuthen in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains in Bavaria .

The castle stables date from the pre-documentary period, so the original name of the facility is unknown. The name Steinelburg comes from one of the last owners of the property, Wolfgang Steinel from Großwendern, who used the forest as a farmer and wanted to build a restaurant on the site. Theories have a tradition that, when searching for the location of the so-called Dietrichsburg, suspect a suitable location there, this is mentioned in a list of properties in a deed of sale from the savages to the burgraves of Nuremberg in 1356 . The attribution as a refuge for the rural population is considered outdated.

The complex is secured from the west by a sickle-shaped moat reinforced with walls . Behind it is a plateau. The terrain is sloping to the east and was difficult to access due to the swampy terrain around the Wenderner Bach. The Burgstall Foerles-Neudürrlas shows similarities in the design of the facility. The occurrence of ribbon slate at the eastern end of the plateau is striking . Cuts in the structures mentioned are mainly due to recent forestry use. Possibly the complex was related to Epprechtstein Castle and secured important connecting roads. The manor in Großwendern can be seen as the successor to the castle stables and initially belonged to the von Hirschberg family , as well as the current Hirschstein ruins , which also has connections to this area of influence. As forester of the Reichsforstes , the Forster von Selb are of local importance.
