CL (real name: Lee Chae-rin, Korean 이채 린 ) (born February 26, 1991 in Seoul , South Korea ) is a South Korean rapper , pop singer , actress , dancer , designer and model . CL began her career at the age of 17 as a leader and founding member of the former K-pop girl group 2NE1 . From her debut until early November 2019, she was under contract with YG Entertainment . The start of her solo career in South Korea was the single The Baddest Female , released on May 28, 2013 . She is also working on her breakthrough in the US market, which she achieved in 2016 with the single Dr. Pepper , in which Diplo , OG Maco and Riff Raff were involved. CL is also active in the field of fashion.

biography

1991–2008: youth and career start

Lee Chae-rin was born in Seoul, but spent most of her youth in Paris , Tsukuba and Tokyo . She left Seoul at the age of 13 to study in Paris for two years. At the age of 15, she was given the opportunity to audition for YG Entertainment.

Lees first appeared in 2007 on a song by labelmate Big Bangs Intro (Hot Issue) . In the same year she made her first appearance with other YG artists on the Seoul Broadcasting System Gayo Daejeon. The first song she officially took part in was Uhm Jung-hwas DJ 2008, in which she rapped.

2009–2013: Debut with 2NE1 and solo songs

As 'CL', Lee Chaerin took the position as leader and main rapper in group 2NE1, alongside Bom , Sandara Park and Minzy . The group then worked with fellow label Big Bang on the song Lollipop , before debuting on SBS's "The Music Trend" on May 17, 2009 with the song Fire . 2NE1 immediately achieved great success with the number one hit I Don't Care , which also brought them the prize in the "Song of the Year" category at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards . This made them the first group to win a Daesang in their debut year.

In August 2009, CL worked with label mates G-Dragon and Teddy Park from 1TYM for the single The Leaders . That same month, CL worked with colleague Minzy on Please Do not Go , which climbed to # 6 on the Gaon Charts in late November .

CL's first singing of her solo career was released on May 28, 2013, The Baddest Female . The song reached number 4 on the K-Pop Hot 100 rankings and number 75 on the US iTunes charts.

For 2NE1's second album Crush , CL wrote the lyrics and co-composed the music for the tracks Crush , If I Were You and Baby I miss you . The album achieved the status of the most successful and best-selling Korean album in America. She also wrote the lyrics for her solo tracks MTBD (Mental Breakdown) and Scream .

2014 – Now: Upcoming English language debut albums

In October 2014 it was announced that CL would make his debut as a solo artist in the United States the following year, with Scooter Braun as their manager.

In May 2015, CL appeared in Diplo's single Doctor Pepper alongside Riff Raff and OG Maco . In November 2015, CL released their first single Hello Bitches as a teaser for their upcoming EP Lifted .

The main single, Lifted , was released on August 19, 2016. The song appeared in the top 30 of the iTunes hip-hop / rap chart within three hours of its release and reached a chart position 21. The Time called CL the "future of K-pop in America". On October 29, 2016, she started her first North American tour, the "Hello Bitches Tour", at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, which she completed on November 14 in Toronto.

In addition to Shaiana , CL can be heard on Lil Yachty's song Surrender , an exclusive track from Target's Deluxe Edition Teenage Emotions album , which was released on May 26, 2017. CL also recorded an original single, titled No Better Feelin, for the soundtrack of the film My Little Pony: The Movie , which was released on September 22, 2017.

On February 25, 2018, on her 27th birthday, CL performed at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, playing parts of The Baddest Female and the 2NE1 song I Am the Best . She chose these songs because on the one hand they reflect her personality very well and the 2NE1 hit is known worldwide. At the closing ceremony, CL met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in , First Lady Kim Jung-sook, EXO , and US President's daughter Ivanka Trump .

At the beginning of August, CL appeared as a "featured artist" at the Hyperplay Festival 2018 in Singapore. In the same year, CL made her first attempt as an actress in the American action film Mile 22 , in which she played the character Queen.

CL parted ways with their long-standing label YG Entertainment in November 2019. On December 4th, CL began to announce their album In the Name of Love with the pre- releases + DONE161201 + and + REWIND170205 + .

Music style and influence

CL was the leader, rapper and singer of one of the most famous girl groups 2NE1 . She cites 1TYM director Teddy Park, who produced much of 2NE1's music, as an influence and inspiration, as well as Madonna , Queen, and Lauryn Hill .
