Attractions
Candelaria is the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in the Canaries. In the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria ( Basilica of Candelaria ) the figure of the patron saint of the Canary Islands, the Virgen de la Candelaria, is venerated. The figure is said to have been found by two Guanches on the beach 100 years before the arrival of the Spaniards , but in 1826 a storm surge tore it from the chapel in which it was kept. The current figure was created in 1830 from an older copy. Pilgrimages take place mainly on February 2nd and August 14th and 15th.
Diagonally across from the church, on the seafront of the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias , are nine larger than life statues of the most famous Guanche kings, who were called Menceys .
traffic
Candelaria is connected to the neighboring municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife via the southern motorway TF-1 and the old Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Adeje road. The first section of the planned railway line Tren del Sur is to connect Candelaria with Santa Cruz.
