Charlotte is a town in Chittenden County of the state of Vermont in the United States , with a population of 3,754 (according to the 2010 census).
geography
Geographical location
Charlotte is located in southwest Chittenden County, on the western shore of Lake Champlains . Many small watercourses run through the town, the largest is Lewis Creek in the south, which flows westward into Lake Champlain. There are only a few small lakes in the area of the town. The surface is flat, with three peaks, the highest of which is the 301 m high Philo Mountain in the south, which forms the Philo Mountain State Park with its slopes .

history
Charlotte was proclaimed one of the New Hampshire Grants for settlement on June 7, 1763 by Benning Wentworth . Charlotte was named, originally Charlotta after Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz , the young wife of Georg III . The first settler was Derrek Webb in 1776. He did not stay through the winter, but came back in 1777, but did not stay again and left Charlotte in May of that year. He did not settle permanently until 1784, and other settlers followed. A ferry service to Essex in New York was established as early as 1790. This ferry service is one of the oldest in the United States and is still in service today.
A connection through the Bellows Falls – Burlington railway line existed until 1961. Peter Shumlin , governor of Vermont until 2017, promised to reopen in 2017.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Charlotte is crossed by US Highway 7 in a north-south direction. It connects Charlotte in the north with Shelburne and in the south with Vergennes. There is a regular ferry service to Essex, New York via Lake Champlain. The closest Amtrak stations are in Westport or Essex Junction.
Public facilities
There is no hospital in Charlotte. The University of Vermont Medical Center , Burlington, is the closest hospital.
education
Charlotte belongs to the Chittenden South Supervisory Union with Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George and Williston . Charlotte Central School is located in Charlotte . It offers school classes from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade.
The Charlotte Public Library is located on Ferry Road in Charlotte.
In Charlotte, the Charlotte Historical Society takes care of the preservation of history.
