Chełm

Chełm (German Stolzenberg ) is a district of Gdańsk ( Danzig ) in Poland . This covers an area of ​​3.89 km² and has 32,242 inhabitants with a population density of 8,288 inhabitants / km². Chełm is the most populous of the 35 urban districts of Gdansk. Parts of the area came administratively to the city of Gdansk between 1814 and 1973.

history

On March 24, 2019, the new 35th district of Orunia Górna-Gdańsk Południe (translated High-Ohra and Danzig-South ) was separated from the district of Chełm, which has been in existence since 2011 and has an area of ​​11.1 km² and more than 51,000 inhabitants .

During the Second World War , a department of Stalag XX B was set up near Stolzenberg; the Danzig-Matzkau penal camp and the Matzkau branch of the Stutthof concentration camp were located in Matzkau . Remnants of the camp are still there.

Stolzenberg, along with Old Scotland, Schidlitz and St. Albrecht, was the capital of the Royal Prussian Immediatstadt Stolzenberg in West Prussia , which was directly under the King of Prussia. It existed from 1772 to 1814 and was also known as the United Suburbs.
