The district of Chachas is located in the province of Castilla in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 903 km². The 2017 census counted 767 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1273, in 2007 it was 1120. The district administration is located in the 2473 m high village of Choco with 229 inhabitants (as of 2017). Choco is 68 km northeast of the provincial capital Aplao .
Geographical location
The district of Choco is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northeast of the province of Castilla. The ravine of the Río Colca runs along the southern district boundary , draining the area to the south. Its tributary Río Molloco flows south along the eastern district boundary.
The Choco district borders in the southwest on the Ayo district , in the west on the Chachas district , in the northeast on the Caylloma district , in the east the Tapay district , in the southeast on the Cabanaconde district and in the south on the Huambo (the last four districts mentioned belong the province Caylloma ).
