During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , Chris Thorburn was selected as the 50th player by the Buffalo Sabers . After Thorburn played for three years with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League from 1999 to 2002 , he was in the 2002/03 season with the two league competitors Saginaw Spirit and Plymouth Whalers under contract.
In the summer of 2003, the attacker played his first season in professional ice hockey with the Rochester Americans , the Sabers' farm team , in the American Hockey League . In the 2005-06 season , the Canadian made his National Hockey League debut when he appeared in two games for the Sabers.
In October 2006 he was put on the waiver list by the Sabers and then selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins . After a season in which he was also used three times for the Pittsburgh farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , he was given to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for a third-round vote during the NHL Entry Draft 2007 . From then on, the attacker played in Atlanta for four years and also accompanied the franchise during its move to Winnipeg , where he has been active for the Jets ever since .
In June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . In addition to being elected - and to protect other players from voting - Vegas received a third-round vote from the Jets in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In addition, the teams exchanged their first-round voting rights in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , so that the Golden Knights rose to eleven positions there. This also happened in view of the fact that Vegas refrained from a further commitment of the Canadian, whose contract expired at the end of the month. The striker therefore signed a contract with the St. Louis Blues on July 1, 2017 as a free agent . There he was active until the end of the 2018/19 season before his contract was not extended. Finally, in June 2020, Thorburn officially announced the end of his active career.
