Christoph Simon (* 1976 in Haan , Mettmann ) is a German documentary filmmaker and director .

Life

During his studies of political science , musicology and philosophy in Halle an der Saale , Cologne and stays abroad in Guatemala and Honduras , Simon began to work as a freelance copywriter for an internet agency in Cologne. From 1999 to 2002 he wrote the texts for the homepage of the TV talk show "B. meets" by TV presenter Bettina Böttinger . At the same time he began to work for the WDR in Cologne as a freelance television writer and documentary film writer.

Simon made his first longer film in 2004 about the Cologne-born hit producer Jack White . Shortly afterwards, Simon began to systematically make documentaries about the Cologne music and carnival scene. He made films about Brings , Marie-Luise Nikuta , Marita Köllner , Die Räuber , Cat Ballou , Kasalla and Marc Metzger, known in the Rhineland as "Blötschkopp" . In 2016, Simon shot a documentary about the Düsseldorf carnival car maker Jacques Tilly . Simon also made the documentary "From Heino to Xavier Naidoo - German Pop is cool" in which he traces the success and history of the German language from the hits of the twenties to today's popular music. Contributors include Heino , Xavier Naidoo , Wolfgang Niedecken , Jürgen Drews , Stefanie Tücking , your children and Udo Lindenberg .

From 2010 to 2012, Simon moved to the SWR in Baden-Baden to work in the arte editorial team as an editor for the culture and society department. Among other things, he was editorially responsible for cinema documentaries such as "John Irving and how he sees the world" and worked for the ARD series "Germany, your artists". He also worked with the documentary filmmaker Harold Woetzel on a five-part documentary about the Black Forest and shot a 45-minute portrait of the jazz pianist and pop singer Paul Kuhn , which was broadcast as a special program on September 23, 2013 on the occasion of the death of Paul Kuhn on ARD .

In 2017 and 2018, Simon shot an artist biography about the showmaster, pop singer, composer and actor Michael Schanze for the series Lebenslinien at Bayerischer Rundfunk . In 2018, Simon shot a documentary with Wolfgang Niedecken about BAP's failed tour through the GDR .

Simon lives in Cologne with his wife and two children .
