Circle of Friends - In the circle of friends (original title: Circle of Friends ) is an Irish - British - American drama with Chris O'Donnell and Minnie Driver from 1995. The literary model was the novel of the same name (1990) by Maeve Binchy .

action

Bernadette Hogan, who everyone can only call Benny, and Eve Malone meet their old friend Nan Mahon again at the University of Dublin in 1957 , with whom they once grew up in a small Irish town. All three were raised in an arch-Catholic way, which is why they are all the more looking forward to their future student life. Through Nan, Benny meets the handsome rugby player Jack Foley, who is studying medicine at his father's request, although he cannot see any blood. Benny and Jack become friends and slowly fall in love. Eve, whose parents died prematurely, also falls in love with a fellow student. Nan, on the other hand, has nothing to do with college boys of the same age and rather feels drawn to the mature and wealthy Simon Westward, with whom she soon starts a secret affair.

When Nan becomes pregnant by Simon, but he does not want to marry her and urges her to have an abortion, she leaves him. Since she perceives an abortion as a mortal sin and, in view of the strict moral standards of those around her, does not want to give birth to an illegitimate child, she decides to seduce Jack and put the baby on him. After Nan succeeded in persuading the drunken Jack to have a fun time together, Jack felt violent guilt towards Benny. Benny's heart finally breaks when she learns from Jack that he will marry pregnant Nan.

Shortly afterwards, Eve celebrates her birthday in an old house where she was once born. Jack and Nan also appear to congratulate her. Eve, who finally sees through that Nan is actually pregnant by Simon and only uses Jack, now angrily threatens her former friend with a knife. Nan injured himself on a broken glass pane, whereupon Jack immediately rushed to help her. Jack, who finally feels that his medical studies make sense after this incident, now learns that Nan is not expecting his child. After Nan leaves Dublin by train, Jack goes to Benny to beg her forgiveness and to confess his love to her. They make up and go back to their studies.
