The place was founded in 1859 with the construction of a railroad line of the then Chicago, Iowa & Nebraska Railroad . At first the settlement was named Onion Grove , which came from the wild onions that grew in the area.

In 1862 the place was renamed at the suggestion of the businessman LB Gere after his original hometown Clarence in the state of New York .
