Corund (outdated Corond ; Hungarian Korond ) is a municipality in Harghita County , in the Transylvania region in Romania .

Geographical location

The municipality of Corund is located in the east of northern Transylvania , south of the Gurghiu Mountains , a part of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains , in the historical region of Szeklerland . In the west of the Harghita district in the valley of the Corund brook , a left tributary of the Târnava Mică (Little Kokel) and on Drum național 13A , the place Corund is 17 kilometers southeast of the spa town of Sovata in Mureș district and about 75 kilometers west of the district capital Miercurea Ciuc ( Szeklerburg) away.

history

The village of Corund, mainly inhabited by Szeklern people, was first mentioned in a document in 1333.

In the area of ​​Corund a protective wall on the summit of the hill Cetatea din Valea cea Mare or also Cetatea Smochinului (Hungarian Nagyvölgyvára , Fugtvára ) and at Cetatea lui Tartód (Hungarian Tartódvára ) a castle is mentioned; both are assigned to the Middle Ages . According to the Directory of Historical Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (Ministerul Culturii și Patrimoniului Național) , several archaeological finds in the area are also assigned to different ages.

At the time of the Kingdom of Hungary Corund belonged to the Udvarhely chair district in the Udvarhely County ( Romanian Comitatul Odorhei ), then to the historical Odorhei district and from 1950 to the present Harghita district.

Corund is known for its mineral water springs, as a health resort with several pottery and as one of the richest Szekler settlements in the region. One of the most famous potters in Corund is Lajos István.

Since 1850, the highest number of inhabitants in the area of ​​the municipality of Corund was determined in 1992. The highest number of Magyars (5,976) was registered in 1941, that of Roma (449) in 1992, that of Romanians (110) in 1977 and that of the German-speaking population (9) in 1880.

  • In Corund, the Unitarian church built around the 16th century and renovated in the 18th century, is a listed building.
