The district of Coyllurqui is located in the province of Cotabambas in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on November 19, 1942. It has an area of ​​419 km². In the 2017 census, 6586 inhabitants were counted. In 1993 the population was 6935, in 2007 it was 7494. The district administration is based in the 3165  m high village of Coyllurqui with 915 inhabitants (as of 2017). Coyllurqui is located 30 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Tambobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Coyllurqui is located in the Andean highlands in the west of the province of Cotabambas. The Río Vilcabamba , left tributary of the Río Apurímac , and its right tributary, the Río Palca, flow north along the western district boundary. The Río Ñahuinlla, also a right tributary of the Río Vilcabamba, flows through the district in a predominantly northerly direction.

The district of Coyllurqui borders in the west on the districts Progreso , Huayllati and Mariscal Gamarra (all three in the province of Grau ), in the extreme northwest on the district Curahuasi ( province Abancay ), in the northeast on the district Cotabambas , in the east on the district Tambobamba as well in the extreme south to the district of Challhuahuancho .
