Crescent City is a city in Putnam County in the US state of Florida with 1,577 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Crescent City is about 35 km south of Palatka and about 110 km south of Jacksonville on the western shore of Crescent Lake .

history

The city received its first rail connection in 1886 when the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway was extended from Jacksonville via Palatka to Sanford . After several sales and restructuring, the route finally came into the possession of CSX Transportation in 1986 .

Crescent City is the birthplace of civil rights activist Asa Philip Randolph (1889–1979).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1577 inhabitants were distributed over 1087 households. The population density was 335.5 inh / km². 58.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 30.8% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 7.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 17.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.9% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 39.1% of all households. 58.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.30 people and the average family size was 3.05 people.

26.7% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 19.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 32.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 44.6% of the population were male and 55.4% were female.

The median annual income was $ 24,231, with 39.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 81.61% of the population, 17.90% spoke Spanish and 0.49% spoke Lao .

The Crescent City Historic District and Hubbard House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Crescent City is crossed by US Highway 17 ( SR 15 ). The nearest airport is Daytona Beach International Airport (around 70 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 558 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were six robberies, no assaults, 47 break-ins, 56 thefts and five car thefts.
