Cronica Monasterii Canonicorum Regularium (S. Augustini) in Glacz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cronica Monasterii Canonicorum Regularium (S. Augustini) in Glacz (German chronicle of the Augustinian canon monastery in Glatz ) was for the most part written by the Augustinian canon Michael Czacheritz . From 1456 until his death in 1489 he was provost of the Augustinian canons in Glatz , which belonged to the Archdiocese of Prague . The chronicle covers the period from the foundation of the monastery in 1349 to the beginning of the 16th century.

history

The Augustinian canon monastery "Mons Mariae" in Glatz, which was founded by the Prague Archbishop Ernst von Pardubitz before 1349 and was settled by monks from the Augustinian canons in Raudnitz , soon gained supraregional importance, which it lost during the Hussite Wars . Because of the necessary reforms, the Augustinian canon Michael Czacheritz from Neisse , who was previously the prior of the Vienna Dorotheerkloster, was appointed provost in Glatz. During his tenure, he wrote a chronicle of the monastery, using older documents and oral traditions to record the years prior to his term since the founding of the monastery. He used documents, privileges, letters and other documents as sources. The chronicle contains the life descriptions of the individual provosts since 1349 including the vita of provost Michael Czacheritz. It has not been established whether the continuation of the chronicle, which extends to 1504, was written by his direct successor or by another author. Although it is mainly devoted to the history of the Augustinian monastery, it is one of the most important writings on the history of Glatz in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Parts of the chronicle, mainly those that relate to the regional history of the city of Glatz and the Glatzer country , appeared in the first two volumes of the "Geschistorquellen der Grafschaft Glatz", edited by Franz Volkmer and Wilhelm Hohaus . It was only in 2003 that a complete edition could be presented that contains a text-critical apparatus . The editing and editing was carried out by the Polish medievalist Wojciech Mrozowicz under the title "CRONICA MONASTERII CANONICORUM REGULARIUM (S. AUGUSTINI) IN GLACZ".

description

Original of the chronicle

The original of the chronicle, which was lost after the Second World War and was only found again in 1980, is now in the Wroclaw State Archives ( Archiwum Państwowe we Wrocławiu ) under the signature Rep. 135 D 159 .

It is a paper code in the format 15.5 × 10.5 cm and consists of 348 sheets. The wooden binding from the end of the 15th century was covered with pigskin. The chronicle consists of 684 pages, with pages 1-639 being written by Provost Michael and pages 640-680 by his successor or chronicle continuer. Of the 639 pages recorded by Provost Michael, pages 1–104 relate to the years 1349 until he took over the post and pages 105–639 to events and occurrences from his time in office. They allow an insight into, among other things, the organizational structures and the monastery statutes as well as the reform of monastic life, which has been sought to renew the church since the Councils of Constance and Basel . The chronicle also deals with liturgical questions and provides information about the equipment of the monastery, the library, the scriptorium and the Latin school . Relations with the Prague cathedral chapter and the bishops of Wroclaw and Olomouc , as well as contacts with the Glatz secular clergy and religious institutions of the Johanniter and Franciscans, take up a large part of the deal . also to other Augustinian monasteries, including in Vienna, Prague, Sternberg , Breslau, Sagan and Krakow and the Benedictine monastery in nearby Braunau . Significant contacts with the town of Glatz and its bourgeoisie were also recorded, as well as, from 1459, with the Counts of Glatz, who reside in the castle above the monastery.

In addition to the chronicle, the original also contains a vita of the funder Ernst / Arnestus von Pardubitz ( Vita Arnesti ) as well as a description of the miracle he experienced in the parish church of Glatz. The Wroclaw canon Valentin Krautwald used this part in 1516 for the vita of Ernst von Pardubitz, which he wrote, which wanted to persecute his canonization, which had come to a standstill due to the Hussite Wars .

On the last pages of the Augustinian Chronicle there are some chronological notes and, on loose sheets of paper, excerpts from various sources on the history of the monastery. The decoration consists only of three decorative initials.

Copy from the 17th century

At the end of the 17th century , a copy of the original manuscript of the chronicle was created in the Glatzer Jesuit College , which after the Battle of White Mountain in 1624 had taken over the Glatzer Johanniterkommende , who in turn had been the legal successor to the Augustinian Canons' Monastery, which fell in 1597. This chronicle was also lost a few years after the Second World War, but could be acquired by the Wroclaw University Library ( Uniwersytet Wrocławski ) after the political change in 1989 . There it is under the signature Akc. 1994 KK 198 recorded.

This codex is 22 × 16 cm; the cardboard cover is covered with parchment. It was created during the tenure of Rector Johannes Miller, who served from 1688 to 1691 and then became Provincial of the Prague Jesuit Province . Six scribes were involved in this copy, which is richly annotated, possibly students of the Jesuit college. In addition to the transcript of Vita Arnesti , it also contains a summary and philological notes.

Copy from the 18th century

This copy is also a complete transmission of the original. It was made around 1785 by the historical researcher Samuel Benjamin Klose from Breslau . It is a large folio manuscript with the dimensions 38.5 × 24 cm with a cardboard cover covered with marbled paper. It consists of 347 written pages, with the notes copied on a wide margin. It is an exact copy of the original with the Vita Arnesti on pages 1–9, the Miraculum on pages 9–11 and the actual chronicle on pages 12–232. The following pages 333–345 contain excerpts from and a description of the Jesuit copy. A description of the original follows on pages 346–347 under the heading “Message from the Chronica Monasterii Canonicorum Regularium in Glacz”.

Summary from the 18th century

This paper code with the dimensions 23.5 × 18.5 cm is a summary of the pen history by the Glatzer local history researcher and pastor Joseph Kögler , as can be seen from the heading: “Compendium Chronicorum BVM Canonicorum Regularium S. Augustini alim Glacii existentium [...] per Josephum Koegler Levinensem , Capellanum Rengesdorfensem , anno 1793 ”. After the Vita Arnesti (II – V) follows the miraculum he experienced in the parish church of Glatzer (V). The following pages 1–42 contain excerpts from the pen's chronicle. This codex is kept in the Diocesan Archives of Wroclaw ( Archiwum Archidiecezjalne Wrocław ) under the signature Depozyt Ołdrzychowice Kłodzkie (Ullersdorfer Dopot), Kögler 43 .
