Dörnberg and Schreckenberge

Dörnberg and Schreckenberge with its subunit Dörnbergpass is around 20 km² in size and on the Hohen Dörnberg a maximum of 578.7  m above sea level. NHN high mountain range or natural area of the Habichtwald Bergland in the West Hessian mountain and sink country . Geographical location

The natural area Dörnberg and Schreckenberge is located a few kilometers west-north-west of the city of Kassel between the towns of Habichtswald - Dörnberg in the south, Zierenberg in the west, Calden - Ehrsten in the northeast and Ahnatal - Weimar in the southeast.

Dörnberg and Schreckenberge (No. 342.3) is part of the natural spatial main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342), which belongs to the main unit group West Hessisches Bergland ( West Hessisches Berg- und Senkenland ; 34). In a clockwise direction , starting in the north, it is framed by these equal natural neighbors:

To the north the landscape drops into the elongated Westuffelner depression (343.50); The Nebelbeeke flows through this valley to the north-northwest . To the northeast is the long and narrow Langen- und Staufenbergplatte (343.51) and to the east is the Kassel Basin (343.3), in which Kassel lies in particular .

In the south, the landscape drops from the peaks of Hoher Dörnberg and Hohlestein into the saddle zone Dörnbergpass (342.30), which is part of the Dörnberg and Schreckenberge natural area, makes up around a quarter of its total area and continues in this direction to the Hohen Habichtswald (max.  614.8  m ) transferred; the latter extends to Kassel in its eastern part. This zone includes the Katzenstein hilltop (approx.  430  m ) and the federal road 251 in its section between Habichtswald - Dörnberg and Kassel- Harleshausen .

To the west the landscape flattens out to form the extensive Zierenberger Grund (342.11), the northern part of the Habichtswälder Senke (342.1); the warmth flows north through this valley . To the west of the valley rise - around the Great Bear Mountain ( 600.7  m ) - the northern parts of the Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen (342.2). North-west of the SchreckenbergeGroßer Schreckenberg (with Schreckenberg Tower) and Kleiner Schreckenberg  - lies the Malsburg Forest (342.4).

The forest cover of the Dörnberg massif, which is mainly located on the south and east flanks, is connected to the southeast by a wooded corridor over the Dörnberg Pass with that of the Hohen Habichtswald . The majority of the summit plateau of the massif and the areas below it to the north, including in the area of ​​the Dörnberg glider airfield , are an extensive cleared area that extends as far as the state road  3214 (Zierenberg-Ehrsten). North of the local Galgenberg with a mountain pass located on this road at an altitude of 363.2  m is the forest area of Großem Schreckenberg ( 460  m ) and Kleinem Schreckenberg ( 474.7  m ).

The Diemel - Fulda -Wasserscheide runs through the southeastern part of the natural area Dörnberg and Schreckenberge in its section between the northeastern Langen- and Staufenbergplatte and the Hohen Habichtswald . Coming from the southern Dörnberg Pass, it runs in the form of a semicircle open to the east from southeast to northeast over most of the peaks of the Dörnberg massif and then on to the Langen and Staufenberg plateaus.

To the east of the watershed rises the Dorfbach , which drains to the ancestor , to the north the Nebelbeeke , which flows in the warmth , and in the south-west, the small Lubach passes the mountain massif, which flows off to the warmth.

The distance from the summit of the Hohen Dörnberg ( 578.7  m ), the highest crest of the natural area Dörnberg and Schreckenberge , to the Großer Bärenberg ( 600.7  m ), the highest mountain of the Hinterhabichtswälder crests , in the west and Hohen Gras ( 614.8  m ), the main summit of the Hohen Habichtswald , in the south is only around 5 km each.
