For the GDR ice hockey championship 1971/72 , the two dynamo clubs from Weißwasser and Berlin played in the major league as usual .

In the determination of the best, due to the number of participants of six teams, a preliminary round in two seasons was played out. The subsequent final round, however, was held in the knockout system. The BSG unit Crimmitschau was ultimately able to defend its title from the previous year.
