The German Society for the United Nations (DGVN) is a registered association and pursues the task of informing the German public about the goals, institutions and activities of the United Nations (UN).

organization

The DGVN was founded in 1952 as a registered non-profit organization and has been a member of the World Association of Societies for the United Nations (WFUNA) since 1966 . The aim of the DGVN is to draw attention to current events in foreign, development, cultural and global economic policy. Furthermore, the DGVN wants to arouse interest in the connections between international relations and stimulate discussion. One focus of the work is the critical monitoring of German UN politics.

The association's work is financed by an institutional grant from the federal government, membership fees and project funds from third parties, whereby public project funds issued by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for UN-related development policy public relations usually make up 90 percent of the project funds from third parties. Institutional funding from the German federal government for the DGVN amounted to 588,000 euros annually in 2010 and 2011.

The DGVN has almost 2000 members.

Events

The General Secretariat (based in Berlin) and the regional associations of the DGVN organize public lectures, forum discussions, symposia and study trips. The participants come from politics, science, the NGO sector and business.

Publications

As an information and documentation center for the United Nations in Germany, the DGVN publishes German-language literature on UN topics in various formats:

• Journal " United Nations ": The scientific two-month publication covers topics from the entire spectrum of the United Nations. It offers analyzes, reports and documentation overviews in German.

• One World Press: Popular themed newspaper on North-South issues and aspects of multilateral development policy.

• UN basic information: Basic information about organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations as well as UN activities.

• Blue series: Studies and discussion texts on UN topics as well as conference documentation appear in this series in irregular order.

• DGVN-Texte: The book series includes publisher publications that are subject to a fee and appear in collaboration with UNO-Verlag and deal in detail with individual UN topics.

• Policy Paper: In this series, authors of the DGVN comment on current discussions in the area of ​​the UN and on UN policy in Germany and the European Union.

• Information service "Population and Development": Three to four times a year for information specifically on the topic of population development.

• Report on human development: German edition of the "Human Development Report" of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) published by the DGVN. This report is published once a year and presents the economic and social development of the world under a special aspect (2001: New Technologies, 2003: Millennium Development Goals, 2004: Cultural Diversity, 2005: Trade and Security, 2006: Water and Sanitation Crisis).

Medal of Honor

The DGVN has been awarding the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of Honor since 1977 . The state association Berlin-Brandenburg of the DGVN has been awarding the Otto Hahn Peace Medal in gold since 1988 for outstanding services to peace and international understanding.
