The Dadau is a left-hand tributary of the Hunte . In most of its upper course it forms the border between the districts of Diepholz and Vechta , on a section of its lower course the border between the city of Diepholz and the integrated community of Barnstorf .

course

The 16.6 km long Dadau rises in the Diepholzer Moorniederung in the Südlohner Moor in the area of the city of Lohne . It then flows northwards between the Südlohner and Brägeler Moor in the west and the Aschener Moor in the east and bends towards the east at roughly the point where the border between the cities of Lohne and Vechta meets their left bank. Behind the federal highway 69 , the Dadau flows partly in an easterly, partly also in a south-easterly direction. In the final section it flows in full width (upstream its right bank largely belongs to the area of the town of Diepholz) through the municipality of Drebber . The Dadau joins Cornau, a district of Drebber, a few meters east of Federal Highway 51 in the Hunte . This continues to flow north in the direction of Oldenburg (Oldb.) . Deckau, also a district of Drebber, lies between the Hunte and the Dadau.

In 2003 the cities of Vechta and Diepholz as well as the municipality of Drebber decided to adapt their borders to the current course of the Dadau. In 2004, the affected districts agreed to the change in the district boundary. Overall, the land consolidation of the Diepholz district increased by 0.8323 hectares at the expense of the Vechta district.

Historical meaning

In the vicinity of the mouth of the Dadau, between the Dadau and the Hunte, was the Cornau moated castle of the Counts of Diepholz , from which they ruled until the castle in Diepholz was built. To the west of Cornau Castle there was a moat that closed the gap between Dadau and Hunte; the remains of the trench were filled in in 1962. The castle fell into disrepair since the 15th century; their remains were removed by 1751.

Since the Reformation, the Dadau has marked the border between areas with a predominantly Roman Catholic population and those with a predominantly Evangelical Lutheran population. To the west of this border were the Niederstift Münster , the state of Oldenburg with the state part of Oldenburger Münsterland and the administrative region of Weser-Ems of the state of Lower Saxony. To the east of the border were the County of Diepholz, the Kingdom of Hanover , the Kingdom of Prussia and the administrative district of Hanover of Lower Saxony.

Nature reserves

The Dadau crosses or borders the nature reserves Südlohner Moor, Aschener Moor / Heeder Moor, Boller Moor and Lange Lohe ; it touches the NSG Drebbersches Moor .

Water quality

The Dadau east of federal highway 69

In 2004, the water quality of the Dadau and neighboring streams was rated negatively by the competent Lower Saxony authorities: “The organic and sand-shaped lowland streams of the western Dümmerniederung can be assessed as moderate to unsatisfactory. Demanding organisms that can show a good quality status only occur occasionally. [The affected streams] flow through a relatively high proportion of moors. As a result of the mostly intensive drainage of these moor areas, the waters are more or less strongly influenced by moor water. The humic substances that are released, which are typical of bog, lead to high organic pollution of the water. Iron and nutrients are released to a considerable extent and lead to eutrophication with oxygen-consuming degradation processes and digested sludge formation . This process is further promoted by low shading and a reduction in flow speeds due to congestion and pipe passages. "

The “Integrated Rural Development Concept” (ILEK) [district] Vechta / Mitte-Süd envisages a revitalization, the “Integrated Urban Development Concept” (ISEK) of the city of Lohne provides for a renaturation of the Dadau.
