The Dammersfeldkuppe in the Bavarian district of Bad Kissingen and the Hessian district of Fulda is 927.9  m above sea level. NHN after the Wasserkuppe ( 950  m ; Hesse) and before the Kreuzberg ( 927.8  m ; Bavaria) the second highest mountain of the Rhön , a low mountain range in Bavaria , Hesse and Thuringia ( Germany ). It is the highest peak in Lower Franconia .

The Dammersfeldkuppe is located within the Hohe Rhön in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve . Its summit is located in Bavaria around 200 m southeast of the border with Hesse - 6.4 km east of Motten and 4.2 km northwest of Wildflecken (in Bavaria) as well as 3.8 km south-southwest of Rommers and 3.4 km southeast of Dalherda (both districts of Gersfeld in Hessen).

To the north the landscape leads over to the Ottersteinen ( 821.3  m ), to the east-northeast via Rabenstein ( 845  m ) and Beilstein ( 864.6  m ) to the Eierhauckberg ( 909.9  m ), to the east to the Rückberg (approx.  870  m ), to the south to the Steinküppel (approx.  746  m ), to the west- south- west to the Ehrenberg ( 671.3  m ) and to the northwest over the Dreifeldskuppe ( 832  m ) to the Dalherdakuppe ( 800.6  m ).

Natural allocation

The Dammersfeldkuppe belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35), in the main unit Hohe Rhön (354) and in the subunit Südliche Hohe Rhön (354.0) to the natural area Dammersfeldrücke (354.00). Its landscape falls to the north in the main unit Vorder- und Kuppenrhön (353) and in the subunit Kuppenrhön (353.2) in the natural area Milseburger Kuppenrhön (353.21).

Rhine-Weser watershed

The Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Dammersfeldkuppe . On the northern flanks of the mountain spring, for example, with the Gichenbach inflows of Schmalnau whose water over the Fulda into the Weser flow on its southern flank the Small sense , the Bavarian name of the Narrow sense , the water on purpose , Franconian Saale and Main the Rhine flows into it.

Protected areas

On the northern part of the Dammersfeldkuppe there are areas of the Hesse fauna-flora-habitat area Haderwald (FFH no. 5525-352; 17.9486 km²) and on the southern part those of the FFH area Bayerische Hohe Rhön (FFH no. 5526 -371; 192.6059 km²). In the north there are parts of the bird sanctuary (VSG) Hessische Rhön (VSG no. 5425-401; 360.8013 km²) and in the south those of the VSG Bayerische Hohe Rhön (VSG no. 5526-471; 190.2908 km²).

Wildflecken military training area

On the Dammersfeldkuppe lies part of the 70 km² large training area Wildflecken , which is surrounded by the Bavarian Rhön and Hessian Rhön nature parks . The military restricted area was established by the Wehrmacht in 1938 . After the Second World War , the training area was temporarily used by the US Army . He is currently jointly by the army and its NATO - Allies used. Due to the restricted area, the summit is usually closed to the public. A tradition, however, which the Bundeswehr continued after the withdrawal of the American armed forces (1994), are the people's hiking days through the restricted military area, which take place once a year on the last weekend in July . During the people's march there is the opportunity to hike the otherwise inaccessible terrain and the hilltop on prescribed trails. The actual summit, however, as an artillery target area, cannot be climbed for safety reasons.
