Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson

Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson (born August 26, 1969 in Stockholm , Sweden ) is an Icelandic artist. He grew up in Reykjavík .

Since the 1980s Daníel Ágúst has composed music of various styles ( electronic music , rock , blues , country and experimental music) and sings in various bands or solo. He also worked as an actor or participated in various roles in art film productions.

Artistic career

Daníel Ágúst represented Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 with the song Það sem enginn sér (German: What nobody sees ). He landed with zero points in 22nd and last place.

In the mid-1990s, while making a short film called Pleasure, he founded the band GusGus together with Sigurður Kjartansson, Stefán Árni Þorgeirsson, Herb Legowitz, Hafdís Huld, Magnús Jónsson, Birna Hafstein, Kjartan Guðjónsson, Stephan Stephensen, Birgirsson, BalduránÞó Magnús Guðmundsson.

In 1996 GusGus signed a record deal with the 4AD label , which released two albums ('Polydistortion' and 'This is normal'). Daníel Ágúst was one of the lead singers of the band until 2000, which he left to focus on other projects.

In the following years Daníel Ágúst wrote various pieces for soundtracks of feature films One or No One , Nurse Betty - Dangerous Dreams , 15 Minutes of Fame , Life or something like that, and documentaries and music for dance theater.

In addition to his musical activities, he worked with Gabríela Friðriksdóttir on the art films Tetralogia , which were shown at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005 in the Icelandic pavilion. Among other things, he was responsible for editing the four short films. With Gabríela Kristin Friðriksdóttir he worked on other art films, including a. at the Art Film Biennale 2007 in Cologne.

In February 2006 his first solo album Swallowed a Star was released on the One Little Indian Records label . The style of this work can best be described in terms of experimental music. The album was not a commercial success but received good reviews.

Since autumn 2006 he has been singing in the Icelandic blues / country / rock band Esja, which he founded together with the Icelandic musician Krummi. The band's debut album was released on August 15, 2009.

After Daníel Ágúst was represented as singer / songwriter with one song each on the two GusGus albums Attention and Forever , he has been a permanent member of the techno / soul band again since 2008 . After 24/7 , the album Arabian Horse was also released on the Cologne label Kompakt on May 23, 2011 .

Private life

Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson has been married to Gabríela Friðriksdóttir since June 13, 1993 . The couple has had a daughter, Daniela, since 1989.
