Daniel Davis (born November 26, 1945 in Gurdon , Arkansas ) is an American actor . He gained fame primarily through the role of the butler Niles in the 1993-1999 sitcom The Nanny .

life and career

Davis began his career as a singer, dancer and comedian at the age of eleven. His appearances were broadcast on local television as part of a children's series. He attended the Arkansas Arts Center , where he graduated in the fine arts . After his release, he was invited to the Shakespeare Festival in Oregon . There he was spotted by a producer who gave him a role in his Broadway -Stück Futz in New York offered.

Davis left Broadway production and moved to the Shakespeare Festival in Stradford, Connecticut , where he continued his career as a theater actor for two years. In a period of almost 22 years he played in several theater groups and had appearances a. a. at The Guthrie Theater, The Williamstow Theater Festival, The National Theater of Canada and seven years at the American Conservatory in San Francisco .

Davis continued to appear in Broadway productions, including Amadeus and with Katharine Hepburn in Coco . On the big screen, Davis starred as Halstead in My Partner with the Cold Snout in 1989 and as Captain Charlie Davenport in The Hunt for Red October in 1990 .

After he had made regular appearances in the US series Texas and roles in television films such as A Mighty Fortress and The Perfect Tribute in the years before , Davis has appeared in a variety of television series since the 1980s. These included individual epids from Cheers , Frasier , LA Law , Remington Steele , Agent with Heart , Murder is Your Hobby , The Equalizer , Cagney & Lacey or as Harry Thresher in a total of five episodes of The Denver Clan . In 1988 and 1993 he played the role of Professor Moriarty twice in Starship Enterprise . In 1992 Davis was seen in the role of a wedding photographer in the Columbo crime thriller Blood Wedding.

From 1993 to 1999 Davis starred alongside Fran Drescher and Charles Shaughnessy in the sitcom The Nanny the butler Niles . He also got the role because he faked a British accent when casting because Niles is from England .

Davis' later roles include judge in Prestige in 2006, as well as guest appearances on television series such as Gotham , The Blacklist and Elementary . He is still active as a theater and film actor to this day.

Daniel Davis has had various German-speaking voice actors over the course of his career. In his most famous role as Niles , he was voiced by Horst Sachtleben .
