Demon killer
Dämonenkiller was originally a series of horror - Issue novels from the Pabel-Verlag , which appeared from 1973 to 1977. The series' main authors were Ernst Vlcek (also known as Paul Wolf) and Neal Davenport (actually Kurt Luif ). The series was continued in a second edition and in several book series. There are also several series of radio play adaptations .
action
Dorian Hunter is the "demon killer", the hero of the series. He fights with his companion, the witch Coco Zamis, against the dark forces on earth and despite risky actions manages to escape the evil every time.
The series begins with the 29-year-old English reporter Dorian Hunter traveling to a castle on the Yugoslavian border with his wife Lilian at the invitation of the demonic Countess Anastasia von Lethian . On the trip he meets eight other men. At the castle it turns out that the countess is his mother, the men his brothers and his father the demon Asmodi, the same head of the "Black Family", a mafia-like organization of demons. Dorian's brothers are enthusiastic about this opening, but Dorian tries to escape. His sensitive wife loses her mind when she meets the demons and does not play a significant role in the further course of the series.
Soon afterwards Dorian meets the young witch Coco Zamis, the two fall in love and Coco also turns away from the "black family". In London, Dorian contacts the Secret Service , which from then on supports him in his fight against the demons for a while. Thereafter, Dorian's demon-fighting campaign is funded by millionaire Jeff Parker. In addition to Coco Zamis, there will soon be other members of the demon killer team, namely Trevor Sullivan, Phillip Hayward and Donald Chapman. The Demon Killer Operations Center is an Art Nouveau villa on Baring Road on the south-eastern outskirts of London with the housekeeper Martha Pickford.
In the course of the following issues it turns out that Dorian had more than one previous life. This is because he is the youngest reincarnation of Baron Nicolas de Conde, who took part in a witch's sabbath in the 15th century in order to obtain eternal life. There he expelled his family and killed his wife, albeit - as he believed - only in appearance and symbolically. When he finds out after the Sabbath that his wife and children are indeed dead, he swears eternal vengeance. In ever new incarnations he pursues his goal over the centuries, the annihilation of the "black family". Most recently he was born into the "Black Family" as Dorian Hunter. Although his father is the “prince of darkness”, that is, the supreme demon, Dorian himself has no magical abilities, but he can recognize demonic beings (“black blooded”).
Notebook novels
First edition
Initially, the stories about the "demon killer" appeared as a loose series within the vampire horror novel , a series of completed novels published by Pabel-Verlag. Since the "DK" quickly enjoyed great popularity with readers, the publisher decided to outsource to its own series, which began with episode 18 ( Das Fest auf dem Teufelshügel ), after Bastei-Verlag had its own series with Professor Zamorra shortly before brought to market. As a result, Demon Killer developed into an exception in the flourishing horror magazine sector at the time. One reason for this was that, in contrast to series such as Ghostbusters John Sinclair or Larry Brent , Demon Killer was not written by one person in charge, but by several authors. The continuity was guaranteed by the fact that they kept each other up to date by writing exposés about the current action. The series was also very popular due to its content structure, which relied less on completed individual adventures than on multiple parts - so-called cycles .
Another one was started with episode 131 - the "Baphomet cycle", which was to extend over 20 issues. In the middle of the story, after Volume 143 ( Avengers from the Realm of the Dead ), the series was suddenly discontinued, as three novels were placed on the list of writings harmful to young people within one year (No. 104, No. 115 and No. 121). In addition, the title still in the series Vampire-Horror-Roman was indexed rampage . A resale would only have been possible "under the counter" for a year, which practically meant the end.
After the temporary suspension of DK, the publisher made a half-hearted attempt to find a replacement with Ernst Vlcek's Hexenhammer sub-series in the vampire horror novel . New novels appeared every two weeks with Derek Hammer and his girlfriend Vesta, but due to the unclear concept, the series did not meet with approval and was discontinued after 20 issues. A sequel was then found in the form of further Coco Zamis youth adventures as part of the demon killer paperbacks .
The main authors of the magazine series were Ernst Vlcek , who wrote under the pseudonym Paul Wolf except for his first three novels, Kurt Luif as Neal Davenport and Walter Appel as Earl Warren. They wrote around two-thirds of the stories published.
Other authors of the notebooks were:
- Derek Chess = Dirk Hess
- Gay D. Carson = Günter Dönges
- Damion Danger = Helmut Rellergerd
- Charles Fleming = Hans E. Ködelpeter
- Raymond Hart = Rainer Delfs
- Merlyn G. Hastur, G. Hastur = Werner K. Giesa
- Hivar Kelasker = Hanns Kneifel
- Pierre Lykoff = Wolfpeter Ritter, better known as Peter Terrid
- George McMahon = Hubert Haensel
- Roy Palmer = Holger Friedrichs
- Hugh Walker = Hubert Straßl
Some authors of the first DK edition (Werner K. Giesa, Hans Kneifel, Peter Terrid and Hubert Haensel) were used by the publisher for the new fantasy series Mythor after its end . Ernst Vlcek was fully occupied with Perry Rhodan in the following period .

Second edition
From 1983 the original novels appeared in a second edition, whereby new indexing should be avoided by appropriate editing and mitigation of possibly offensive content. As it turned out, the revisions and cuts concerned not only the indexed titles, but it was also shown that all volumes had been edited to a greater or lesser extent. So was in In the Sign of Evil by Ernst Vlcek (Vampire Horror Novel No. 23), the first novel in the series
“And the creepy figures came closer. One hand went into her mouth and pulled her lower lip down, another grabbed her chest and squeezed it as if to crush it. Hands grabbed her neck and bent her head to the side, and a shadow bent over her tense neck. "
in the second edition replaced by
"And the creepy figures came closer."
The cuts and retouching were not limited to the text, the cover was also defused if necessary, so on the cover of issue 49 ( Die Höhle der Untoten by Gay D. Carson), the lower human head in the hand of the demon was cut away and the upper one replaced by a dragon head.
These changes are also the reason that the novels of the second edition as demon killer with child protection were not appreciated by the fans and hardly noticed in the new editions of the Zaubermond Verlag.
The readers eagerly awaited the "Baphomet cycle", which ended abruptly in the original version, but were disappointed by Pabel-Verlag. Those in charge decided to publish only two-part or disjointed single stories from volume 131 instead of the successful cycle concept. The plot of the "Baphomet cycle" was dealt with in two novels. The once successful concept was only taken up again with volume 163. A cycle set in Latin America was completed, another set in the time of the 30 Years War began with volume 173. But the readers were again unpleasantly surprised: After three parts, Volume 175 was another end for the demon killer - this time for economic reasons. After the accidental death of Werner Müller-Reymann, the editor-in-chief of the Pabel publishing house, some less successful series were put up for discussion and it was decided to end DK. The decision was made when the first issue of the new cycle had just appeared, based on the sales figures for the individual stories, which were meager, which was hardly surprising after the departure from the once successful series structure.
In the second edition, the previously indexed issue # 7 was omitted, whereby the following numbers were shifted by 1, ie number 7 of the second edition was number 8 of the first etc. This continued until number 34, where the new novel The Black Stallion was inserted by Neil Davenport. From then on, up to and including number 130, the titles of the first and second editions matched (except for the indexed issues 104, 113, 115, 118 and 121, where the titles were changed after revision, see above). The following numbers 131 to 175 were new in the second edition:

Dorian Hunter (Bastei Publishing House)
In September 2018, Bastei Lübbe Verlag began to reissue the Zaubermond editions as book novels and e-books under the series title Dorian Hunter , with each issue containing a story from the Zaubermond anthologies. A comparison of number 1 with the first edition (vampire horror novel # 23) shows no major changes apart from linguistic corrections.
Book series
Demon Killer paperbacks
The DK pocket books appeared from March 1975 to May 1980 in 63 volumes a month. The volume was 145 and from volume 37 161 pages, the price rose from DM 2.80 at the beginning to DM 3.80 at the end.
Contrary to the expectations of fans when the series was published, the demon killer paperbacks had little to do with the booklet novel series about Dorian Hunter. The majority of the volumes were translations of Anglo-Saxon horror novels. The series formed a counterpart to the series of the Vampire paperback books , whereby the authors of the DK paperback books were generally less known.
Volumes related to the booklet series were initially Die Tortterkammer by Ernst Vlcek (vol. 22) and then two volumes with stories from the youth of Coco Zamis, namely Coco and the Devil's Student (vol. 28), also by Vlcek, this time as Paul Wolf, and Coco and the Magician (Vol. 31) by Kurt Luif as Neal Davenport. From volume 52, Coco Zamis stories by Vlcek and Luif appeared monthly, until volume 58 announced that it would only be published every two months due to the heavy workload of the authors. Volume 60 Coco and the Rubber Death , which followed two months later , was the last, and volume 63 ended the series.
The authors of the series were:
- W. Howard Baker
- Brian N. Ball
- Cedric Balmore = Hans E. Ködelpeter

Radio plays
The label Europe appeared five Dämonenkiller - radio plays . Peter Lakenmacher then spoke to Dorian Hunter and Inken Sommer Coco Zamis . The radio plays, which are based on the magazine novels, are titled:
- 1 In the sign of evil
- 2 The executioner's sword
- 3 The doll maker
- 4 experiments of horror
- 5 amok
Three more radio plays were planned, but were not published:
- 6 duel with the rats
- 7 labyrinth of death
- 8 The torturer
With Amok (original rampage ) and that novel was set to music, which could no longer be published in the second edition of the series for reasons of protection of minors. However, the depictions of violence in the original were deliberately left out and instead used subtle horror.
In 2007, the first episode in the sign of evil was re-set to music by Nocturna Audio under the series title Demonenkiller Edition 21 . Due to a legal dispute with the rights holder, however, the episode was only allowed to be sold by the manufacturer until the end of 2007.
In 2008 the publishing house Zaubermond began to set the series again. The publisher now led the series under the title Dorian Hunter - the name of the main character. Thomas Schmuckert sets the main role to music. The script is written by Andrea Bottlinger and directed by Dennis Ehrhardt .
