The last thing he wanted (AKA The Last Thing He Wanted ) is a political thriller by Dee Rees , who in January 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival made its debut and in the program of the February 21, 2020 Netflix was taken. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Joan Didion .

When her mother dies in 1984, journalist Elena McMahon quits her job at the Atlantic Post , goes home to see her dying father, and takes on his job as an arms dealer for Central America. In this role she conducts business in Central America for a secret government agency. McMahon quickly finds himself embroiled in an international political conspiracy. She has to flee a military complex and goes to a remote island off the coast of Costa Rica .

The film is based on the novel The Last Thing He Wanted by Joan Didion , which was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1996 and adapted for the film by director Dee Rees together with Marco Villalobos .
As with Mudbound , Netflix secured the international rights to the film.
The main role of Elena McMahon was cast with Anne Hathaway . Willem Dafoe plays her dying father Richard. Ben Affleck took on another role.
The shooting took place in the summer of 2018 in Puerto Rico , one of the locations of the film.
The film music is provided by the singer-songwriter Tamar-kali .
The film premiered on January 27, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival and was shown on Netflix from February 21, 2020.

In December 2018, Anne Thompson's The Last Thing He Wanted was named one of IndieWire's 20 most anticipated films of 2019. However, the film received mostly negative reviews.
