David Clarkson (born March 31, 1984 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 614 games for the New Jersey Devils , Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets in national hockey between 2001 and 2016 League on the position of the right winger .
Career
David Clarkson began his career as a hockey player in the Ontario Hockey League , where he was active from 2001 to 2005, initially for a year for the Belleville Bulls and then for three years for the Kitchener Rangers . With the Rangers he won both the OHL championship and the traditional Memorial Cup in 2003 .
Following his junior career, the attacker was signed as a free agent by the New Jersey Devils on August 12, 2005 . In the 2005/06 season , the Canadian initially played exclusively for their farm team , the Albany River Rats from the American Hockey League , before making his debut in the National Hockey League for New Jersey in the 2006/07 season . In his rookie season in the NHL, Clarkson played mainly for New Jersey's new AHL farm team, the Lowell Devils , from the 2007/08 season only for the NHL team of the New Jersey Devils.
In July 2013, Clarkson signed a seven-year deal worth $ 36.75 million with the Toronto Maple Leafs . The average annual salary is $ 5.25 million. After a year and a half, however, it was given to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Nathan Horton . In the Jackets season, the attacker only played 23 games in the 2015/16 season due to recurring injuries, before finally missing the entire 2016/17 season due to a back injury. It is considered unlikely that Clarkson will ever return to professional ice hockey.
As part of the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft , the Vegas Golden Knights took over Clarkson's contract from the Blue Jackets and in return received William Karlsson in the draft, a first-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . Although the striker had not played an NHL game since 2016, he was under contract with the Golden Knights until July 2019 due to his current contract and was on the Injured Reserve List . The Clarksons contract was then handed over to his ex-team Toronto Maple Leafs, along with a four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft , who sent goalkeeper Garret Sparks to the Golden Knights. Toronto took over the last year of the contract they signed with Clarkson in July 2013.
