David Hogg

David Miles Hogg (* 12. April 2000 in Los Angeles , California ) is a former student at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MDS) in Parkland ( Florida ), where the local school massacre survived on February 14, 2018 ( Parkland Survivor ). Since then he has been an activist against gun violence and for stricter gun laws and an author . As a co-founder of Never Again MSD and the initiator of the March for Our Lives and other protests, he became a leading voice in the 2018 gun control protests in the United States, victim of conspiracy theories and multiple awards.

education

David Hogg was born in Los Angeles in 2000 to a former FBI agent, Kevin Hogg, and a schoolteacher in Broward County and has a younger sister named Lauren. The family moved to Florida in 2014. Hogg aspired to become a journalist , and one of the reasons he chose Marjory Stoneman Douglas High was because it offered courses on television production . He participated in the school news Eagle Eye News .

Laura Ingraham by the Fox News made fun that in March several universities in which he had applied, it had rejected, then apologized but. In response, Hogg called for a boycott of companies that advertised on their show; a total of 24 of them then left the show. After graduating from high school on June 3, 2018, he announced that he would have a gap year to continue his activism in Washington, DC . On December 22nd, he announced that he would attend Harvard University to study political science from autumn 2019 . Harvard's decision to accept him was criticized by right-wing figures for Hogg's below average results in the application test ; Defense attorneys argued that this shows that the test is not everything.

His sister Lauren joined MDS three years after him and will graduate in 2021.

Parkland School Massacre

On February 14, 2018, a Wednesday, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High was attacked with a rifle by a former student who had previously set the fire alarm , killing 14 students and three adults. David and Lauren Hogg were also present at the school that day. David was in an advanced placement course in environmental sciences at the time , when noises were heard that - as he told the teacher - sounded like gunshots, and the teacher locked the door. Because there had already been a test alarm that day, they also mistook these noises for exercise. When the fire alarm sounded, the class headed for the exit, unwittingly also in the direction of the perpetrator, but a janitor sent them back to the classroom of a teacher named Ashley Kurth, where there were a total of 30 to 40 students. This locked the room and hid students in a closet. David credits the caretaker and teacher for saving the lives of the students through their heroic acts. In the closet, David found out about the crime in real time on his cell phone and used the device to document his situation, interview classmates and leave a message in case he didn't survive: “We're at school right now , [here is] a Sagittarius. It is not an exercise and it is happening right now, it is 2:52 am. I heard a gun, I heard a shot. We thought it was an exercise at first, but it isn't. ”David received a text message and a phone call from his sister, who was at the other end of the building, away from the Sagittarius, and he himself called her father, who was him calmed down and replied, "I'm on my way." Lauren sent the message to her mother: " Code Red . At school. I love you too. ”, But then her battery ran out, so that her parents didn't hear from her during the attack. After about an hour, a SWAT team took the students out and David, Lauren and their father Kevin Hogg met.

David stayed on the school premises until Thursday and spoke to reporters in the morning: “This is unacceptable. This is something completely unacceptable and we must act. [...] No more children should die. We must act. ”In particular, he called on legislators for actual action:“ We are children, you are the adults. You have to act [...] and get something done. "

Activism against gun violence

As a result of the attack, many surviving MSD students , in addition to Hogg as prominent names including Emma González , Alfonso Calderon and Cameron Kasky, became activists against gun violence and for stricter gun laws, who organized and led protests, called for boycotts and the National Rifle Association and politicians who accepted donations from the NRA were heavily criticized. While this mostly affected Republicans , the students stressed that their movement was not affiliated with or directed against a single party. Hogg said, “The politicians in this country need to work together. And I don't care if you're a Republican or a Democrat . It's about the lives of children. ”In an interview with CNN , he said what he wants to see implemented in the legislation:“ That the minimum age for owning a weapon is raised to 21 nationwide; that bump stocks are banned; that universal background checks are secured; ensuring that people who have perpetrated domestic violence can no longer get a gun, which is more difficult in Florida but not yet impossible; that people with a criminal past or mental disorders can no longer get these weapons of mass killing. "

Kasky founded the Never Again MSD organization on Thursday , which Hogg and González joined as leadership on Saturday when she and Kasky spoke for stricter gun control at a rally in Fort Lauderdale . Kasky said of the two: “We said we are the three voices of this. We are strong, but together unstoppable. Because David has great self-control, he is incredibly politically intelligent; I have some self-control; and Emma wonderfully has no self-control at all, because she doesn't try to hide anything from anyone. “The students who want to appear in the media as much as possible gave several comments and interviews to news channels in Parkland and in this way also announced the March for Our Lives for March 24th.

On Wednesday, February 21, a student delegation traveled to Tallahassee to meet with Florida MPs, including Debbie Wasserman Schultz , at the Florida State Capitol while meeting with President Donald Trump was held in Washington, DC . According to his mother, Hogg declined an invitation to Washington to be in Tallahassee and urged Trump to come to Parkland. David, who had already flown to Los Angeles on Monday, met with Lauren and survivors from the rampage at Columbine High School at Dr. Phil , which aired on February 22nd, and flew to Tallahassee the same day. About the meeting there, he said, “This is just a practice run. If we can do it at the federal level, that won't count anymore. "

Hogg called on tourists not to spend their spring break in Florida until gun law reform is passed and suggested Puerto Rico as a destination instead . When Republican Leslie Gibson, who was unopposed for a seat in the Maine House of Representatives , called González a " skinhead lesbian" and Hogg a "bald-faced liar" and a moron in March , Hogg called for Gibson to play, and Gibson did resigned from his candidacy.

A month after the attack, a National School Walkout took place in which students and teachers left their schools for 17 minutes (equivalent to the 17 deaths) that Hogg helped organize. After its success, he posted an NRA-style ad for the March for Our Lives on Twitter under the hashtag #WhatIf . The day before the march, Hogg spoke at an Axios event on gun control. In an interview with Mike Allen , the media criticized the MSD for underrepresenting the black student body. During the March 24th march, he gave a speech against inactive politicians, citing the cry of "No More". He wore a $ 1.05 price tag around his neck referring to US Senator Marco Rubio . Hunter Pollack, brother of a victim named Meadow, was unable to deliver his speech at March for Our Lives and claimed to have been disfellowshipped. Hogg posted a video of the speech Hunter gave at a Ride for Meadow event.

On Twitter he urged the Speaker of the House , Paul Ryan , a vote on universal background checks allow a video message addressed to him: "Oh hello. I tried to call you before but the line was blocked. I left a few messages, but I wanted to make sure you heard this. I would love it if you actually allowed us to vote on Universal Background Checks in-house. Over 90% of Americans support them. They can help save some lives, and they have been widely endorsed. Don't even bother to answer this; just do it! Thank you. ”With the hashtags #MyMessageToSpeakerRyan and #AllowTheVote he called on other users to participate. A fact check in October 2017 confirmed the 90%.

On April 20, Hogg participated in a National School Walkout to mark the anniversary of the Columbine High School rampage after the principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High threatened students with fines if they attended and criticized the media for not including MSD, schools, witnessed the attacks and carried out protests, especially if they neglect a predominantly black student body.

In May, a group of survivors in Parkland staged a die -in at a Publix supermarket in protest of pro-NRA candidate Adam Putnam's financial support, and Hogg called for a boycott of the chain, prompting Publix to suspend donations.

In June, David and Lauren Hogg published #NeverAgain: A New Generation Draws the Line , which hit the New York Times bestseller list. They donate their earnings. David is also the founder of the March for Our Lives in the October book Glimmer of Hope: How Tragedy Sparked a Movement, and promoted it with González and Wind.

Voter registration

A key concern for Hogg and Never Again MSD is to increase voter registration and turnout, especially among younger citizens of their generation who have turned 18 since the last election and were able to vote for the first time in the 2018 mid-term elections. The main aim was to vote out candidates supported by the NRA (“Vote them out”). At their events, such as rallies, marches and walk-outs , they also offered participants the opportunity to register for the election. Hogg used his 18th birthday to call to vote. That he received his draft card (certificate that he was registered in the Selective Service System ) that day but the government did not automatically register him for election was ridiculous. He devoted his gap year increasingly to the topic of youth voter turnout with the aim of achieving the largest increase in American history. In June, Hogg started a bus tour through the country with March for Our Lives , called Road to Change , which stopped in over 80 communities in 24 states, in NRA strongholds and locations with cases of gun violence, in order to register young voters and exchange ideas with other survivors. Hogg also spoke to counter-protestors on various occasions, such as Open Carry Texas . Further appointments took place in the autumn until shortly before the mid-term elections. In addition, in late August, Hogg began working with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for the Mayors for Our Lives program, which aims to encourage mayors across the country to support young voter registration initiatives.

2019

A year after the attack, Hogg gave speeches in February at Holliston High School , Massachusetts , and in March at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis , Minnesota .

On August 1, Gabby Giffords and March for Our Lives announced a panel discussion for Democrats on gun control to be held on October 2 in Las Vegas on the anniversary of the 2017 Las Vegas mass murder . Hogg, who invites and urges candidates to participate on Twitter, said he wanted them to see bold and holistic plans that address all aspects of gun violence, including suicides and other types of shootings that get less attention than mass murders.

Conspiracy theories and threats against Hogg

Following the massacre and the first reports of survivors, conspiracy theories were quickly spread by conservative politicians, right-wing extremist opinion makers and Russian internet bots , many of whom were directed against Hogg in various forms, mainly claiming that he was not a student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High , but a “Crisis Actor” paid (by George Soros ). Benjamin A. Kelly, an employee of Rep. Shawn Harrison who wrote the allegation to the Tampa Bay Times newspaper , was subsequently fired. In 2017, while on vacation in California, Hogg recorded a video of a dispute and gave an interview about it, which was re-uploaded after the massacre by a user on YouTube with the description "David Hogg, the actor". This video topped YouTube trending before it was deleted. Other conspiracy theories related to a photo of David and Lauren at a CNN news desk that was taken while on a visitor tour. A police photo of David Guyton Hogg, arrested in 2016, who was then 26 years old, was also used to question the student's identity. Hogg called the conspiracy theories "great recruiter". As a result of their attacks, his followers on Twitter had increased significantly and the reports about him continued in the media, for which he thanked them. In December, the conspiracy theories about Hogg and other survivors such as González were named "Lie of the Year" by Politifact .

In February, Hogg's mother announced that the family had received multiple death threats. On March 26, TV presenter Jamie Allman threatened Hogg on Twitter by writing that he was preparing to attack with a poker . Hogg called for a boycott of advertisers; two weeks later, Allman resigned and his show was withdrawn from the program. On June 5, the Broward County Sheriff received an anonymous phone call that there was a hostage situation at the Hogg family home, which turned out to be a swatting prank upon entering . David was in Washington with his family at the time to accept an award.

Honors

At the end of March 2018, Time unveiled the cover of an April issue showing Jaclyn Corin, Alex Wind, González and Hogg with the words “Enough”. The Parkland Students were included in the Time 100 of 2018 and received a contribution written by Barack Obama .

In May, Hogg received the American Spirit Award from the nonprofit The Common Good , presented by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg , who said he was inspiring; in addition he received a bonus for his college fees.

In early June, the “March for Our Lives” founders received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award , presented by Ethel Kennedy, along with other youth groups .

In November, Hogg, González, Corin and Matt Deitsch received the International Children's Peace Prize for March for Our Lives , awarded by Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate .

In March 2019, Hogg and the other founding members of the March for Our Lives were named "Communicator of the Year" at the PRWeek US Awards.
