Dead or Alive ( jap. デッドオアアライブ Deddo oa Araibu in short DOA ) is a fighting game - video game series of the Japanese developer Tecmo . The plot and the playable characters were created by the game developer Tomonobu Itagaki and programmed by a small team called Team Ninja .

Dead or Alive was released in Japanese gambling halls in 1996. In October 1997 an implementation for the Sega Saturn came onto the market. The PlayStation version of Dead or Alive was released in Germany in March 1998 .
The first part of the DOA series was released for the Model 2 slot machine in Japan. Tecmo was so surprised by the success that it was decided to port the game to the Sega Saturn and bring it out in Japan. As it turned out later, this was a huge mistake as DOA was poorly selling on the Sega Saturn. On Sega's 32-bit console, Sega's in-house Virtua Fighter series dominated the fighting game scene with two successful ports and a remix of the first part. In general, Dead or Alive was left behind. Also Tekken , a fighting game video game series of the Japanese developer Namco , was very popular at that time and could in the arcade against or Dead Alive prevail.
In March 1998 the last port of Dead or Alive for the PlayStation was released. The PlayStation version has been graphically adapted to the hardware of the home console compared to the original version and expanded to include additional moves and two new characters ( Bass and Ayane ).
Even back then, the player was allowed to choose from today's DOA-typical game modes ( Survival, Kumite, Team Battle, Versus, Tournament, Time Attack ). In training mode , the player trains his favorite fighter and learns new moves. In Danger Zone Mode , which only appears in the first part of the DOA series, the fighter loses energy by leaving the ring or is thrown into the air by the mines standing around.
A special feature of Dead or Alive is under the menu item "Bouncing Breast" . The bouncing breast feature lets the breasts of the female characters move up and down (physically exaggerated).
The combat system and the game mechanics are based on the fighting game Virtua Fighter 2 by the console manufacturer and game developer Sega . Three buttons (punch, kick and counterattack) are used in the game. Only in the later parts does the combat system become more complex and challenging. The player has eleven characters (including two unlockable), 100 moves and 84 costumes to choose from.

Dead or Alive 2 ( DOA2 ) appeared on the Naomi slot machine in Japan in 2000 . The Dreamcast version came onto the market in Germany in March 2000. In December 2000, an expanded version of Dead or Alive 2 was released for the PlayStation 2 .
The plot ties in with what happened in the first part. Fame Douglas , the founder of the first dead-or-alive tournament, was murdered at the end of the first part. Since then the world has fallen into chaos. Tengu , the murderer of Fame Douglas, wants to subdue the world and therefore announces a second tournament. The goal is to defeat the final boss Tengu and thereby save the world from his rule.
14 characters (including Kasumi and Bass, Tengu can be unlocked) and eight game modes (including story mode and versus mode) are available to the player. In addition to the typical DOA characters such as Tina, Zack and Kasumi, two new additions have been made: the hobby opera singer Helena and the Italian mercenary Leon. The character Ein is Hayate, Kasumi's brother, who has lost his memory. At the start of the game, each character has two costumes to choose from. More can be unlocked, increasing the number of available costumes to up to eight.
A special feature of Dead or Alive 2 are the arenas (stages). The stages are not only significantly larger and more extensive than in the previous version, but also for the first time divided into several levels and delimited by walls and terrain.
The expansion of Dead or Alive 2 appeared under the title Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore for the PlayStation 2. The high sales figures and good reviews from the game testers were the reason for a PlayStation 2 implementation. DOA2: Hardcore was a huge success in Europe and the US despite tough competition from Namco , Tekken Tag Tournament . Except for a few innovations, the game has remained the same as the original version in terms of content. The innovations include:

Dead or Alive 3 ( DOA3 ) was released in March 2002 exclusively for the Xbox .
The storyline of its predecessor, Dead or Alive 2 for PlayStation 2, is continued in some places. Ryu Hayabusa, a 23 year old ninja, defeated the creature Tengu at the end of the second part. Professor Dr. Victor Donovan , member of the DOATEC organization , “creates” a new “monster” (originally a human) named Genra .
The player has a total of nine game modes ( story mode, time attack mode, team battle mode, survival mode, tag battle mode, sparring mode, versus mode, watch mode and theater mode ), 17 characters and 14 stages (including forest and beach) are available. The story mode is at the heart of Dead or Alive 3 . There you have to choose a fighter and let him compete against other fighters. As soon as you have defeated all opponents with one figure, including the boss Omega (project code name of Genra), the player receives one of 16 rendered FMV sequences that tell the story of the respective character. These sequences can then be viewed at any time in theater mode.
The 14 “battle arenas” or stages all look different and, like in the predecessor Dead or Alive 2 , are structured interactively. The player can throw the opponent several floors down with a targeted punch. Objects lying around (e.g. neon lights) break.
The game offers three new characters ( Hitomi, Brad Wong and Christie ), two new game modes ( Tag Battle and Team Battle mode ) and new moves / costumes / stages.
Aerosmith is responsible for the soundtrack and music.

Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball ( DOAXBV ) is a sports game released exclusively for Xbox in March 2003 . The game developer Tomonobu Itagaki had had the idea of a volleyball game with the DOA characters two years earlier .
The player has to choose from a total of eight female characters (including Hitomi and Tina) two to compete against each other in a match. There are two different modes in the game. In the first mode, Play , the player can play beach volleyball alone or with an additional player.
The second mode, Go to Zack's Island , can be compared to the story mode in the DOA games. First, the player chooses a character from a total of eight characters and starts a new game.
In the intro you learn that Zack has bought an island and that he is attracting all female fighters to his island under the pretext of holding a dead-or-alive tournament.
Zack's island is divided into different areas. In the game, for example, swimsuits, sunglasses, shoes and other accessories for changing the characters can be bought. In addition, the characters can be viewed with a zoom or take part in three games of chance ( blackjack , poker , roulette ) or use a slot machine.

Dead or Alive Ultimate ( DOAU ), which was called Dead or Alive Online when it was announced , was released exclusively for Xbox in February 2005 .
The game contains the first two parts of the Fighting Game video game series in one twin pack. Part 1 is the Sega-Saturn version of the original arcade game. The second part, which was released for Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 at that time , was technically adapted to the Xbox . As a playful innovation, the counter system has been revised.
Further innovations compared to the original are the three new selectable characters ( Bayman , Tengu and Hitomi ) and a new intro video, which also tells a lot about the characters' history. There are also new areas, songs and additional clothes (up to 20 outfits per character). The first and second part can thus be played online on the Xbox. Up to eight players can be in a lobby and then compete against each other in one of the numerous modes. The new songs include, for example:

Dead or Alive 4 was released in Germany on January 24, 2006. According to Tomonobu Itagaki, developer of DOA4, the focus of the game is on online matches. In addition to the online versus mode, which allows up to four players at the same time, there are online rankings for Time Attack, Survival, the most frequently used characters, the best characters and the option of downloading videos from other players. The player can also use a so-called online lobby. The game has improved HD graphics compared to its predecessor. There is also an extended "Ground Play", which makes it possible to hit opponents lying on the ground with attacks instead of just using certain movements as in the previous versions. After the destruction of Omega in part three, Hayate, who became the leader of the ninja village again, decides to destroy DOATEC, the organization that has brought so much suffering to his village, forever. Meanwhile, Helena, the daughter of the killed company founder, tries to rebuild DOATEC in a peaceful manner, but has to deal with the power-hungry DOATEC scientist Donovan.

The successor to DOAXBV was released in December 2006 for the Xbox 360 . The gameplay is based strongly on the predecessor, but has been expanded and optimized in many points. New are the "Marine Race", a water slide, beach flag races, butt squabbling, tug of war and a photo mode. The offline multiplayer mode has been canceled, but it is now possible to compete against one another with up to four participants in the Marine Race via XBox Live or to play one against one in volleyball.
The story takes place according to DOA 4. DOATEC was destroyed. Zack found the treasure of a pharaoh and has become a billionaire again. With the help of an “outstanding intelligence”, he succeeds in recovering the island that has sunk into part one. His plan is to rebuild DOATEC and thus restore peace in the galaxy. Following rumors of a fifth martial arts tournament, nine women are on the island.

Dead or Alive 5 was released in Germany on September 28, 2012. It is the first part of the series in which Tomonobu Itagaki was not involved. Since the third part, it is also the first game in the regular series that has been released for a PlayStation console. The innovations compared to the predecessor are changed character models. So the characters now look older and more realistic. You can also see dirty clothes and skin on the fighters after a fight, as well as beads of sweat running down. The counterattack system has been redesigned so that it is now more difficult to catch a successful counterattack. Further changes are the so-called power blows, powerful blows that you can perform when you are low on life energy and that can turn a fight around at the last second. The new characters are the taekwondo fighter Rig, the Spanish MMA fighter Mila, the daughter of the notorious mountain demon Tengu, Nyotengu, the mysterious malicious servant Marie Rose, the Raidou revived / rebuilt by Donovan, the sweet all-fighter Honoka and the warlord Rachel there. Three characters from SEGA's Virtua Fighter series, Akira Yuki, Sarah Bryant and Pai Chan, will also join the rest of the fighters. The story mode has also been changed. So you no longer play several fights with one character and get an end sequence at the end, but you control different characters via a continuous story whose plot is related.
A "New DOA5 project" was announced at the DOA5 Ultimate Tournament in Japan. At the end of the video you can see Momiji from the Ninja Gaiden series as a playable character. In the meantime, the game has been confirmed as Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate , and the official website for it has been put online. In addition to Momiji, it brings back Leon as a playable character, as well as almost all functions of Dead or Alive 5 Plus, which was released for PS Vita in spring 2013. The second expansion Dead or Alive 5 Last Round for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, arcade game and Microsoft Windows has been available on the markets since February 20, 2015 and has all the functions and DLCs from the " Plus ”(PS-Vita) and“ Ultimate ”version (Xbox 360, PS4). In the meantime, however, there are rumors on the net based on the last costume DLC, the "Koei Tecmo 50th Birthday DLC", that Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are working on a successor to the Dead or Alive series, probably Dead or Alive 6 .
Dead or Alive Paradise
Dead or Alive Paradise is a port of Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (Xbox 360) for the PSP . It was released on March 30, 2010 in the US, April 1 in Europe, and April 2 in Japan.
Dead or Alive Dimensions
Dead or Alive Dimensions is the first game in the series that can be played entirely in 3D. It was released on May 19, 2011 in Japan, May 20, 2011 in Europe, and May 24, 2011 in the United States. There are 26 characters.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3
Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 (short: DOAX3 ) was released on March 24, 2016 for the PlayStation 4 as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Fortune and for the PS Vita as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Venus only in Japan, South Korea and China. It has not yet appeared in Europe, the USA or other countries, but it can be imported from Japan and China. The action of the game takes place after the events from DOAX2. After the "Zack Island" is destroyed by a huge volcanic eruption, Zack does not give up and rebuilds the island. According to Zack's own statement, the result is "the best island of all time", the "New Zack Island". As in the previous part, the fighters are invited to spend 14 days on the island. As in the previous part, there are nine playable female characters in the game, which were selected through a popularity contest in November 2015. The results were extremely surprising for fans and many more, as many old well-known fighters were replaced by many DLC fighters.

Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation
Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation was released on PC in November 2017 and is basically more of a mobile game on the PC than a real game. As in the last parts of the Xtreme series, you are on Zack Island. The aim of the game is to collect as many outfits as possible and to improve values such as POW (attack power) and TEC (technique) for the volleyball games (which are the only playable element in the game and it is relatively automatic). Many rumors arose about this game due to the 3 new characters Misaki, Luna and Tamaki.
Dead Or Alive 6
Shortly before E3 in August 2018, Koei Tecmo surprisingly presented the continuation of the Dead or Alive series, Dead or Alive 6 . The release took place on March 1st, 2019, although it was actually postponed by two weeks due to errors in optical details and balancing problems. For the first time in the Dead or Alive series, the game will support 4K. For the first time in history, the traditional gameplay techniques Critical Break and Critical Blow are being removed and replaced by a completely new attack control system, called Fatal Rush , in which a bar also has to be charged for the first time in game history. The Fatal Rush serves as the fourth attack option and can be ended in the new Fatal Blow , similar to the Critical Break, which empties the entire bar and does great damage. Also included is the break hold , which can counter attacks of all kinds, at the cost of half a bar. Basic game mechanics like Wall Splat and Ground Bounce have also been changed so that you can now hit more combos. There are many of the familiar characters in the game, but also two new characters. On the one hand there is the scientist Nico, originally from Finland and 18 years old, a master of the ancient martial art Pençak Silat, who also wears EMP rings to conjure up lightning and teleport. On the other hand, there is also the street thug Diego, originally from New York and 26 years old.

The story begins with the reappearance of the breakaway organization MIST, which emerged from DOATEC. MIST aims to revive the legendary warrior of the Mugen Tenshin clan of the Hajinmon sect and father of Ayanes, Raidou. It is made clear that Nico is also part of the MIST organization and is leading the Raidou resuscitation project. However, its original energy is still required. Nico finds out that Honoka currently has this energy and has unconsciously used it in a fighting tournament.
