El chico de la armónica is a song by the Spanish singer and actor Micky , which is also known in its English version, The Mouth Organ Boy , and which gained greater fame in Germany thanks to the German-language cover Der Junge mit der Harmonica by Bernd Clüver .

Creation and publication

The song was written by the Spanish songwriter José Fernando Arbex Miró. The first interpretation of the song comes from the Spanish singer and actor Micky from 1971, who initially released the piece as a 7 ″ single ( catalog : 3-10659) under the music label RCA Victor in his home country of Spain. This interpretation was also produced by the author Miró. The engineering was carried out under the joint direction of José Antonio Alvarez Alija, Manuel Barrios and Nacho Dogan. As a studio musician, Paco Ruiz can be heard on bass guitar. The single was released in the original - with its Spanish lyrics - under the English title The Mouth Organ Boy . The original title "El chico de la armonica" was only added as a bracket. The single contains the song Follow Me (Sigueme) as the B-side . The single was later released with an English text (catalog: 3-10672), which was also written by Miró. On the front covers of the singles - in addition to artist names and song titles - a little boy can be seen playing on his harmonica . The back of the cover also shows the boy, next to Micky, sitting on the back of a park bench. The artwork for this comes from Miguel Cutillas, the photography from Wladimiro Bas .

The same single version appeared in Germany in February 1972 (catalog: 74-16 138). A promotional single for The Mouth Organ Boy (El chico de la armónica) was released in Mexico in 1972 (catalog: 76-3666). In the same year the single was published in France under the French title L'enfant à l'harmonica with its Spanish lyrics (catalog: 40.011). In 1974 El chico de la armónica was part of Mickey's debut album Soy así .

background information

Clüver was already active as a "rock and underground disc jockey" with friends in various bars in the Mannheim area during his student days . He made the acquaintance of the Mannheim pop and beat group Joy & The Hit Kids . Its drummer Hans W. Herkenne persuaded him to make test recordings , which took place in Herkenne's living room. The demo recordings caused a sensation and Clüver received an invitation to the International Radio Exhibition (IFA) in Berlin to perform at the SWF Talent Show. He also received an invitation from Peter Meisel and Peter Orloff to make test recordings with them. In November 1971 he recorded his debut single She comes again , but it was no more than a "respectable success". As his successor, Orloff had the Germanization of Dr. Hooks Sylvia’s mother provided, which Clüver did not agree with. Alternatively, the Spanish song El chico de la armónica had been considered, for which an English text already existed: The Mouth Organ Boy . Orloff wrote the German text with the title Der Junge mit der Harmonica in a "Nacht- und Nebelaktion" . Clüver stated in a later interview: "I sang the title through in one go and Peter danced through the studio cheering" a hit, a hit - this will be a hit "".

Before the single was released, a legal battle arose. The producer team around Vicky Leandros had similar thoughts , who had also recorded the song in German, albeit with a different text. Your version with the title Harmonica Boy should also be released as a single, which resulted in "wrangling" over the rights. Ultimately, Hansa and thus Clüver got the contract.

Awards and hit competitions

After the song was initially rejected by the ZDF hit parade at the end of 1972, the record company made use of its right to offer a title twice. On the second attempt, the proposal went through and the boy with the harmonica was ultimately able to score some successes in the ZDF hit parade. In the 42nd episode from January 20, 1973 Clüver appeared with the title as the first new presentation. In the next edition of February 17, 1973, Der Junge mit der Harmonica was able to position itself in fourth place. In the 44th episode of March 17, 1973, the song rose two places and landed in second place. Clüver only had to get Chris Roberts and the title Mein Schatz You are a stunner! give up. Due to the fact that Orloff appeared three times with the title in the charts, he was no longer available for the upcoming edition. On September 29, 1973 the song won a Golden Lion from Radio Luxembourg . The piece prevailed against the third-placed Immer wieder sonntags ( Cindy & Bert ) and the second-placed Power to All Our Friends ( Cliff Richard ) and shared first prize with Ein Festival der Liebe ( Jürgen Marcus ). On October 18, 1985, Clüver received a golden tuning fork for The Boy with the Harmonica .
