action

In Jiscalosse, a fictional village in the Landes department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France , the mayor Martine sells part of the municipality to Gerhard Jäger, the eccentric head of a German automotive supplier, in order to avoid bankruptcy of the municipality. Over the heads of his workforce, Jäger decides to outsource the design department of his company there, so that the employees and their families have to move to the south of France. Among them are department head Manfred with his son Dominik, controller Karsten with his wife Marion and their two children as well as the complaints officer Chloé, who comes from Jiscalosse as a French but actually wanted to escape her homeland.

The Germans are welcomed by the residents partly with delight and partly with suspicion. Ghyslaine, the hotel operator and Chloé's mother, is particularly unsuitable for the new neighbors. She organizes a resistance movement, which brings her daughter's anger. She in turn has to come to terms with her childhood friend, with whom she had never officially broken up and who is still in love with her. When her German friend Andreas shows up, she has to decide.

Manfred, on the other hand, a single father, settles in well in the new environment after initial difficulties. He falls in love with Odile, his son Dominik's new teacher. When his ex-wife Katherine, Dominik's mother, shows up, his son initially turns away from him, as Manfred had told him for years that his mother had died. Odile is also deeply hurt. However, they get along again, Dominik can forgive him when he falls in love with a classmate.

When Jäger had the idea of relocating the design department again, this time to Spain, employees and locals rehearsed the uprising, headed by Ghyslaine, which the Germans no longer want to give up. Even controller Karsten, who with his pedantic manner had the biggest adjustment problems at the beginning, does not want to leave anymore. Finally, Jäger gives in, but dismisses Manfred, who then runs as candidate for mayor of Jiscalosse after learning that his father was a native of France.

Reviews

Victor Redman writes on bento.de that the interplay of black and autumn is effortless and that the characters work well together. That is "rare and worth seeing." Sophie Krause from Tagesspiegel thinks the series offers "amusing international understanding".

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online, on the other hand, considers Deutsch-Les-Landes to be a “serial fiasco” and “a role backwards from the present-day series in terms of content, aesthetics and humor”. He praises Christoph Maria Herbst, but the series only draws its modest potential from the fact that "the two countries were hostile to each other in two world wars". Alexander Moritz also had little to gain from the series on Deutschlandfunk and summed up: "The clash of cultures remains all too clichéd." In France, too, the criticism was sometimes very negative; The review of the French film information service Allociné asked: “  Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au bon Dieu du streaming pour nous infliger ça?  » (“ What have we done to the God of streaming that He does this to us? ”) . The reviewer qualified the series as "old-fashioned and embarrassing" (vieillot et gênant) , especially in comparison to productions by Amazon from other countries, such as Transparent (USA) and Beat (Germany).

The fact that the series is completely synchronized is also criticized. It is “completely meaningless”, says Thomas Lückerath on DWDL.de , “when, thanks to synchronization, we watch German-speaking French learn German in order to communicate with the Germans in town.” In addition, Deutsch-Les-Landes knows “in in many ways not what it wants. French comedy in the slapstick style mixes with German humor of the drier kind. “Nevertheless, one laughs very seldom for a comedy.
