The Stepford Wives (original title: The Stepford Wives ) is an American comedy film from the year 2004 . The plot is based on the novel The Women of Stepford by Ira Levin from 1972, which was filmed with Katharine Ross in 1975 under the same title . The film opened in German cinemas on July 15, 2004.

action

Joanna Eberhart, a successful but ruthless television show producer , is fired. She and her husband Walter Kresby are moving to Stepford, a gated community . They are surprised to find that most of the wives in the village accept their traditional roles without objection. There seem to be few exceptions, like the writer Bobbie Markowitz.

The men, led by the charismatic Mike Wellington, meet at a club that Walter will soon join. Mike reveals the secret: The real wives have been converted into cyborgs and can be controlled like robots by microchips in their brains .

Walter Kresby destroys the headquarters that controls the cyborgs, which gives women back their free will. It turns out that Mike Wellington is a robot built by Claire Wellington who dreamed of a perfect world. The women take power in the village and let their husbands do housework .

Reviews

Peter Travers compared the film in Rolling Stone magazine from June 10, 2004 with the novel adaptation from 1975, which he considers to be much better. In comparison, this film is "the horror - and mindless" ("terror - and clever-free"). Travers only praised the portrayal of Bette Midler.

Blickpunkt Film writes: "Only the cast of the protagonist with Oscar winner Nicole Kidman ( The Hours ) and almost all other roles are top-class, which of course significantly increases the commercial prospects."

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “particularly valuable”.

background

Billy Bush , who moderates various national contests and other events, has a small role as the presenter of I Can Do Better .

The shooting took place in Darien , Connecticut, USA . Since one was not satisfied with the end result, various scenes had to fall victim to the scissors, so several re- shoots were organized. Among other things, Nicole Kidman had to interrupt her filming of The Interpreter for several days because of the re- shooting .

Gross profit

The film grossed $ 59,484,742 in the United States and $ 102,001,626 worldwide, including € 3,058,058 in Germany.
