action

When the actress Adele Spitzeder came to Munich in 1865 , her situation seemed hopeless. She is completely destitute and borrows more and more money at ever higher interest rates in order to survive. The spiral into absolute poverty is getting worse. But Adele doesn't give up. Instead, it promises the highest interest rates to all people who invest their money in their newly founded Dachauer Bank . In the face of initial resistance, she can prevail and more and more people are investing their money in her. The success of Adele, who is decried as a “bank maid”, also calls for many envious people. In particular, her public appearances, which are addictive, but also in a variety of ways, create many critics. But she flatters them away and donates a new tower to a church so that they can be praised in the sermon, distributes alms to the poor and without further ado buys a newspaper to silence her critics and to publish articles with praise.

But Adele is also still an actress looking for artistic confirmation. So she tries to get close to the young poet Balthasar Engel. But his admiration cannot be bought. He recognizes the staging in her. Outwardly, Adele shows herself to be a god-fearing lady who is close to the people, although she is secretly an uncontrolled gourmet who gives in to all desires. Since she remains aloof, she doesn't just make friends. Rather, their interest rate fraud seems to be exposed. After all, Adele collected everyone's money so that she could use it to pay other people's interest. While she has lived on other people's money, her pyramid scheme collapses. Creditors, competitors, and the police unite to eventually arrest them.

Reviews

"Actually attractive biographical (television) film about a charming business woman and lady life, in which parallels to the business conduct of today's banks are not accidental."

“Director and cameraman Xaver Schwarzenberger staged the true story of the speculator and fraudster Adele Spitzeder (1832–1895) as an entertaining tabloid play. Based on the script by Ariela Bogenberger ('In aller Stille', 'Maria's Last Journey'), a moral picture of the time was created. The celebrated theater actress Birgit Minichmayr shows in the title role of Adele Spitzeder once again that she is one of the best young German-speaking actresses alongside Fritzi Haberlandt and Sandra Hüller . "

“The film [...] paints a very exciting picture of Spitzeder as an emancipated, self-confident career woman with a scandalous love life and a heart for the weak in society, only mentioned in passing. The fact that cheated customers took their own lives because of you can only be seen in one scene in the eyes of the cheated, who have to find out that they will not see their money again. "

“Birgit Minichmayr [...] plays Adele gripping, screaming, courting, great; Nevertheless, The Seductress Adele Spitzeder turned out to be a mediocre, because mediocre entertaining film. That is strange, because so much seems to be really consistent and courageous. [...] First there is the unusual heroine. So far, the most negative qualities that the format of the public-law historicizing television biopics allowed its women to drama were stubborn to stubborn [...] At Spitzeder it is pure selfishness. [...] Such an ambivalent heroine is a risk for a television production. No viewer wants to identify with such a beast. To dust that off, the dramaturgy of the story takes the drama. One could easily have made a lesson about greed and money out of Spitzeder [...] The television film, however, is a comedy dad in well-groomed Oxford Bavarian. [...] The elementary force that lies in this story is rattled away. There is no depth, no height of fall , not a bit of despair, and the seductive nature of the seductress also has a somewhat holter-dipolar effect.
