When the actress Adele Spitzeder came to Munich in 1865 , her situation seemed hopeless. She is completely destitute and borrows more and more money at ever higher interest rates in order to survive. The spiral into absolute poverty is getting worse. But Adele doesn't give up. Instead, it promises the highest interest rates to all people who invest their money in their newly founded Dachauer Bank . In the face of initial resistance, she can prevail and more and more people are investing their money in her. The success of Adele, who is decried as a “bank maid”, also calls for many envious people. In particular, her public appearances, which are addictive, but also in a variety of ways, create many critics. But she flatters them away and donates a new tower to a church so that they can be praised in the sermon, distributes alms to the poor and without further ado buys a newspaper to silence her critics and to publish articles with praise.
But Adele is also still an actress looking for artistic confirmation. So she tries to get close to the young poet Balthasar Engel. But his admiration cannot be bought. He recognizes the staging in her. Outwardly, Adele shows herself to be a god-fearing lady who is close to the people, although she is secretly an uncontrolled gourmet who gives in to all desires. Since she remains aloof, she doesn't just make friends. Rather, their interest rate fraud seems to be exposed. After all, Adele collected everyone's money so that she could use it to pay other people's interest. While she has lived on other people's money, her pyramid scheme collapses.
