action

Three brothers live in a village carpenter's shop. The two older Peter and Paul treat their younger brother Till as the stupid and clumsy one, although he is not at all. They call him the stupid . He is dreamy, partly childlike and can even understand the language of animals because his heart, unlike his brothers, is in the right place.

Princess Luise is to be married at all costs in the nearby castle. Her aunt Edeltraud insists that she finds the presence of her niece in the castle disturbing, also from the point of view that the dictatorial wife wants to guide her brother, the king, undisturbed in the direction she wanted. Since the death of his wife, Luise's mother, he has fallen into melancholy. Luise also misses her mother very much. On a ride in the royal carriage through the village, Till can also catch a glimpse of the princess. He immediately notices that it is impossible for her to smile because she has a deep sadness in her. Your charm touches him.

Meanwhile, Till's brothers go together in the forest to chop wood and meet a mysterious beggar. Since they are very unfriendly in their demeanor and do not give the beggar anything of their food, he ensures that their ax slips off the trunk and hits a branch. This falls on them, so that they easily injure themselves. Some time later, the mocked Till also goes into the forest to chop wood. His food is worse than that of his brothers, because he only gets ash cake and water, but he willingly shares his food with the poor man. As if by a miracle, the water suddenly turns into wine and, thanks to the beggar, the ash cake turns into pancakes. As a reward for his helpfulness and good-naturedness, the little old man wants to give something to Till. He shows the boy an old tree and when Till knocks him down with just one blow of the ax, he finds a goose made of gold under the roots. He wants to give this to the sad princess, which the goose advised him to do. The people he meets on his way to the castle look at the golden poultry with interest. As innocent as Till is, he didn't count on the greed of his fellow men. Everyone wants to get hold of at least some gold feathers. But everyone who approaches the goose sticks to the one in front of him. An interesting queue of people forms: the two host's daughters, the priest, the arrogant Prince Amandus, who was supposed to marry Princess Luise, but fell under the robbers on his way back from the castle, as well as the two robbers themselves, who are trying in vain, the Golden Goose to cut off from the human chain.

After the initiation of a marriage with Prince Amandus failed, Princess Edeltraud hatches a new plan. Luise is to be married to the first man who makes her smile, regardless of his origin. So now half the population of the country tries to make the princess laugh, but no one succeeds.

In the end, Till comes to the castle with his funny human chain and the golden goose . Immediately more visitors to the castle get stuck on the train, which then becomes even longer. After the greedy aunt desperately wants the Golden Goose for herself and can only barely push through the chained people, she falls in the end, which causes the princess and everyone else to burst into laughter.

The king is satisfied and puts his greedy sister in her place. He gives his daughter and half the kingdom to Till. The goose is now releasing its “prisoners” and everyone cheers the young couple.

The robbers end up in the dungeon and the prince may be compensated with the landlord's daughter, the goose waddles past the laughing beggar and both leave the castle courtyard.

background

The golden goose is a co-production by ZDF and the Erfurt Kinderfilm GmbH. The film was shot in Thuringia at Burgk Castle , in Veßra Monastery in the Hildburghausen district and Tambach-Dietharz in the Gotha district .

The film goose Agata from the Telligmann film animal school was seen in Die Vermessung der Welt in 2012 and in Der Medicus in 2013.

The film had its television premiere on December 19, 2013 on ZDFneo . A repetition took place on December 24, 2013 on ZDF .

Deviations from the literature

The special feature of this film adaptation is the inclusion of the beggar as a frame figure. He appears at the beginning of the film, brings the unconscious Till back on the right path in the middle of the film and appears with the goose at the end. Furthermore, the chain of people who stick to the “Golden Goose” consists of the two host's daughters, the pastor, the prince and the two robbers, while in the Grimm version, next to the host's daughters, the pastor, a sexton and two farmers the goose will stick. Right at the beginning you learn that the princess should not be married by her father, but by her aunt. The three tests (including drinking a wine cellar) are only recited by the queen, but the stupid does not have to pass them.

Two robbers are inserted as a subplot. A running gag are the robber rules that the robber father asks his slightly idiot son:

Robber rule # 1: The rough only when necessary.
Robber rule No. 2: To be a robber means to wait.
Robber Rule No. 4: Do not attack a prince until he has received his dowry; on the way back!
Robber rule no. 5: Small tricks make the life of a robber a lot easier.
Robber rule No. 7: Head off - only if there is no other way.
Robber rule No. 9: Cut off the path of refugees, then you won't break a sweat!
Robber rule No. 17: flee while you still can!

The viewer does not learn what rules 3, 6, 8 and 10 to 16 mean.

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff explained for tittelbach.tv : "The multi-award-winning children's film writer duo Anja Kömmerling / Thomas Brinx, a well-known cast ideally cast for the roles, careful visual design and rousing music ensure that 'The Golden Goose' is a very special fairy tale film. If earlier ZDF fairy tales often seemed too long because the stories had to be stretched to 90 minutes, this time the authors can even afford to cut the end of Grimm's fairy tale. "

At Focus , Joachim Hirzel was quite appreciative of the numerous ideas that made “'The Golden Goose', this well-known fairy tale, appear very fresh and downright surprising in the ZDF version. The screenplay writers Anja Kömmerling and Thomas Brinx did well to leave out the three tests of the dummies - drinking wine barrels etc. - which take up a large part of the Grimm's original, and instead embellish the first part of the story with many large and small ideas . There were no stupid people at work with this film. "
