The red sun of vengeance (original title: La banda JS: cronaca criminale del Far West ) is a spaghetti western by Sergio Corbucci from 1972. The German-language premiere took place on November 24, 1972.

action

The pretty Sonny dreams of escaping her dreary everyday life and leading the life of an outlaw. When she meets the dreaded bandit Jed, she sees her chance. Jed is an unusual outlaw who only steals from the rich and is hiding in Bandera with the peaceful Somillo tribe. Sheriff Franciscus is his greatest enemy, because he's been after him mercilessly since Jed escaped from his prison leaving many corpses behind. After Sonny initially and roughly refused to accompany her, Jed feels compelled to accept her because of Sonny's stubbornness and the danger posed by Franciscus. After several raids together, the two marry and then steal from the priest.

When Franciscus is able to provide the couple, they demand amnesty and promise him a share of the booty. Franciscus sets her love nest on fire, but goes blind in the process; Sonny and Jed can escape. At a banquet of the noble Don García Moreno, Jed takes his wife hostage and brings her to Bandera. The jealous Sonny leads Sheriff Franciscus to Jed's hiding place. Jed is badly wounded and is nursed back to health by Sonny. He now has to follow Sonny almost slavishly - the opposite ratio compared to the beginning.

Reviews

  • The lexicon of international film saw a “mixture of western elements, comedy, parody and sentimental love story in the guise of spaghetti westerns”. Other critics were clearly more disappointed with the film by Corbucci, his first western comedy, which had already presented masterpieces in the genre: Christian Keßler called it "one of the most extreme exercises in genre parody" , whose hero lines up "in the gallery of unintelligent revolutionaries of Subversives against their will ”, whose robust coarseness towards his girlfriend is disturbing. G. Colpart attested "physical, direct cinema", the non-stop violence of which, however, deprives itself of its effect.

Remarks

The film songs Sonny and Sweet Susan were interpreted by I Cantori Moderni . The gross profit in Italy was 190 million lire .
