Alexander Dimitrenko (born July 5, 1982 in Evpatorija in Crimea , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a German professional boxer of Ukrainian origin and a former European heavyweight champion.
Amateur career
As an amateur, Dimitrenko won 57 out of 65 fights (35 wins early). In 1998 he was Ukrainian youth champion and in 2000 in Budapest junior world champion in super heavyweight. In 2001 he became the Russian super heavyweight champion and in the same year he moved to the professional camp.
Professional career
In 2001 he was signed to Universum Box-Promotion . He made his professional debut on December 8, 2001 against the American Marcus Johnson.
He celebrated his first success on March 5, 2005 when he won the IBF Youth World Championship. He scored a point victory over the American Chris Koval. Despite a knockdown by his opponent in the second round, Dimitrenko was able to assert himself in the following rounds and secure victory.
On July 2, 2005, he boxed against Andreas Sidon, who was twenty years his senior . After a restrained first round, in which there was hardly any action from Sidon, Dimitrenko managed to knock down at the beginning of the second round. Sidon continued the fight, but had to go back to the ground a little later, so that the fight was stopped by the referee. With this victory Dimitrenko won the intercontinental titles of the WBO and the IBF .
On November 18, 2007, Dimitrenko defeated Timo Hoffmann in the twelfth round by a technical knockout. He got two knockouts in the fourth and twelfth round, but surprisingly went down in the fifth round for the second time in his career .
In 2008 Dimitrenko defeated the Puerto Rican Derric Rossy and the stable colleague Luan Krasniqi each prematurely and was then nominated for an elimination match of the WBO association for a world championship match against the WBO title holder Wladimir Klitschko. His opponent in this encounter on July 4, 2009 Hamburg was the American Eddie Chambers . Dimitrenko had to be counted twice in this fight and could not meet the high expectations; he finally defeated Chambers over twelve rounds clearly on points.
After more than a year absence from the ring, he should box against Audley Harrison for the European Championship. Since Harrsion resigned the title for a World Cup chance against David Haye , Dimitrenko boxed on July 31, 2010 against his compatriot Jaroslaw Zavorotnij for the vacant European Championship (EBU) and won by knockout in the fifth round.
He should have defended his first title on December 4, 2010 against Albert Sosnowski from Poland . Dimitrenko suffered from an intestinal disease shortly before the fight in his cabin, completely dehydrated, a circulatory collapse , whereupon the fight was canceled. The fight then took place on March 26, 2011 in Hamburg. Dimitrenko won in round twelve by knockout. The second successful title defense he completed against the experienced British Michael Sprott , against whom he won with a clear points victory. Then he should compete in a mandatory defense of the European title against the Finn Robert Helenius . This fight did not materialize, however, because Dimitrenko underwent an operation for an elbow injury in October 2011. As a result, the European Championship was revoked and declared vacant.
On May 5, 2012 Dimitrenko boxed in Erfurt for the now vacant European Championship against the unbeaten Bulgarian Kubrat Pulew . He lost this fight by knockout in the eleventh round, he went to the ground after a hit from Pulew with his leading hand and was counted.
