Dirk Faust

Dirk Achim Faust (born August 20, 1966 in Herbornseelbach ) is a German officer , Brigadier General of the Army of the Bundeswehr and, since April 2020, Head of the Strategy and Operations II subdivision in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin .

Military career

Training and first uses

Promotions

In 1986 Faust joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate with the Panzer Grenadier Battalion 132 in Wetzlar . From 1986 to 1989 he was trained as an officer . As one of the few officers without a degree, Faust did not attend a Bundeswehr university . Instead, from 1989 to 1990 he was employed as a fire control officer in Panzergrenadierbataillon 142 in Neustadt (Hesse) . From 1990 to 1991 Faust was again assigned to Wetzlar as a platoon leader with the 133rd Panzer Grenadier Battalion . He was then transferred to Koblenz , where Faust was employed in the Panzergrenadierbataillon 342 from 1991 to 1995 as a training officer in the NCO training company, S2 officer and S6 officer in staff . During this period he took part in his first foreign assignment in 1993/94 as a press officer on the UNOSOM II mission in Somalia . In the same battalion he was company commander from 1995 to 1998 . 1998–1999 it was used in the army's combat simulation center in Wildflecken (S3 officer combat force). From 1999 to 2001, Faust completed his training as an officer in the general staff service at the command and control academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg .

Service as a staff officer

After completing his general staff training, Faust was employed as a G3 planning staff officer in the Army Command in Koblenz from 2001-2003 . From 2003 to 2004 Faust took part in the Command & General Staff Officer Course at the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas ( USA ). After returning to Germany, from 2004 to 2006 he was employed as a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense, command staff of the Armed Forces  I 5 in Bonn . This was followed by another assignment in troop service from 2006 to 2009 as a battalion commander of the 401 Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Hagenow . During this time he also took part in his second foreign assignment with ISAF as the commander of the Kabul ( Afghanistan ) mission and support association . Faust was then employed from 2009 to 2011 at the personnel office of the Bundeswehr in Cologne as a personnel leader of the army general staff officers. This was followed by a transfer to Stadtallendorf to the special operations division , where he held the post of G3 advancement from 2011-2013. During this time in 2012/13 the third foreign assignment followed in Kosovo as Chef de Cabinet at the KFOR commander . From 2013 to 2015 he was employed as head of division in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin in the Strategy and Operations department.

Service as a general

From May 2015 to May 2016, Faust was promoted to Brigadier General as Deputy Force Commander and Chief Military Observer in the United Nations Mission in Liberia . From July 1, 2016 to April 2020, he was brigade commander of Airborne Brigade 1 in Saarlouis , before succeeding André Bodemann as sub-department head of Strategy and Operations II in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin .
