The Chilca district is located in the Cañete province of the Lima region in central western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​475.47 km². At the 2017 census, 21,573 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 12,438, in 2007 14,559. The administrative seat is the city ​​of Chilca, 2.5 km from the Pacific coast , with 13,920 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Chilca district is located in the far north of the Cañete province. It extends from the coast to about 38 km inland. The district includes the lower and middle catchment area of the Río Chilca River. The district has an 8 km long coastline. The mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera rise to the east . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) crosses the district. The district consists mainly of arid desert-like landscape.

The district of Chilca borders in the northwest on the districts Pucusana , Santa María del Mar and San Bartolo (all in the province of Lima , also Lima Metropolitana ), in the northeast on the Santo Domingo de los Olleros ( province of Huarochirí ), in the southeast on the district Calango and in the south to the districts of Santa Cruz de Flores and San Antonio .
