He sold it to Messrs. Clark and Lake. Lake settled in the area, was later killed by Indians. A fort was built across from Swan Island in 1754. It was named after Governor William Shirley . Pownalboro was organized as a town in 1760 and named after Thomas Pownall . For more than 30 years, Pownalboro was the Shire Town of Lincoln County's and the former Lincoln County's Court House is in the town. It was placed under monument protection. The first settlers in 1760 included the Cushing brothers Willian , Charles and Rowland. They shaped the area, William and Rowland were lawyers and judges, Charles Brigade General of the Militia and the first sheriff of Lincoln County.

Dresden was the western part of Pownalborough and on June 25, 1792 Dresden was organized as an independent town. The name comes from Dresden , as many of the early settlers recruited by Samuel Waldo came from the area around Dresden.

Portions of Alna were added to the area in 1841 and Swan Island was given to Perkins in 1847.
